adding lights, additional lighting, extra lights, lighting circuit add-ons

Cell Propelled's picture

I think at one point, I read something about adding extra lighting to the VX-1. At this point, I'm ready to add the lighting to my trailer. I need to know if the bike and all the smarts it has, adding the few tail lights and turn signals to the system, the extra draw to the area curcuits, will the system overlook them. It's not like the old days of "carbed V8 engines", where I could open the hood and tinker, to the modern EFI world. I would like to think that I could add a few lights and be done, not worrying about some computer Anal-ized curcuits. HA!!
Let me know please, if you have come across this answer.

Hello and Welcome to our forum, I was also an electrician. your question about adding lights is like asking if the panel has enough power! for us and the varying voltages we use power as watts! if you are running an (Isolated) DC-DC CONVERTER from bat. Voltage, to 12-13.5V than you want to stay under 80% of the rated wattage of the (isolated)dc-dc controller. WE know it can be stretched But! !! You can use the frame as ground for the 12V but Do Not ground the battery system to the frame !! PS. LEDs use very few watts, So! Leave me a message if you want LaTeR

thank GOD I wake up above ground !!!!

The rear light may well burn out if you add more power draw.

If the voltage drops too much (and it has very little "surplus") then some IC in the rear LED array ramps up the current draw to keep the power sufficient for the rear light. That overheats it and the IC burns out. Details are somewhere in the Collaborative Handbook.

This information may be used entirely at your own risk.

There is always a way if there is no other way!

the other thing is there is only about 2A spare.

draw more than that and one (or a few?) of the computers crash, resulting in a bike that doesn't move until reset.

You know,...thinking about this, what if I went behind the head light to grab the higher amp circuit to backfeed outside power of 12v power into the system feeding at a low volt, but helping the amps for distance,...and maybe have a refreshing affect on helping the front first out cell that everyone keeps talking about that fails. I would think that I would have to go back before the switching at the feed of the 12v, so it will be not after the headlamp command.
