Super huge motor arrives.... controller / throttle to follow

Well, the motor from United Hobbies arrived! Very fast shipping, I ordered on Friday and it got to me on Wednesday from Hong Kong. The packaging was secure and everything seemed in place:

The motor is much heavier than it looks and it rotates with a definite clunk-clunk-clunk. I got the 130Kv version which means that at the 24 volts that I plan on running it, my max RPM should be 3120 rpm, which isn't that different from the current brushed motor I'm using so I won't have to fiddle with the gear ratios much.

I do like the odds and ends they include, including the very handy motor mount. Since this is an outrunner motor, the outer shell actually spins around so you can't mount it like a normal motor, you have to mount the one stationary end. It has two spindles, I'll be using the one closer to the base to run my V-belt and affix a small propeller blade on the one on the far end to help cool the motor.

One thing that concerns me are that the motor windings aren't varnished. Can anyone tell me how to varnish them -- or whether that would be a Genuine Bad Idea ™?

Unfortunately, I ordered the ESC and servo tester from separate places and they still haven't arrived, so there's nothing to do right now but twiddle my thumbs.

I can't find it anywhere online, do you happen to know the total length of the shaft on this motor?

The base and the prop side shafts are both 1.5" each. They're also both 12mm spindles although the prop side is threaded.

So is the full length 6 inches? I need to know if it will fit in a spot on a bike and need to know the overall length.

The body is 4" and each spindle is 1.5" so the total length is 7".

You can just chop off the prop spindle (the threaded one) if you don't need it and want it to fit in a smaller space.

Wow, pretty long even if you chop off one end... Thanks for the info! What speed control did you end up getting?

Yeah, it's bigger than I thought and it looks like I'll have to chop off part of the ICE engine mount on my Boxer to get it to fit. :-(

I ended up getting (well, it hasn't arrived yet) an ELF 100A ESC off someone in Ebay. I cheaped out, what can I say, it was $30. The problem is that he's taking forever to ship.

Now, in hindsight I should've just gotten the Phonenix HV100 from United Hobbies at the same time, I'd have been out and running by now.

I posted a blog note about the servo tester that just arrived, the good news is that it uses a 5K pot.

Ahhh, good to know! I'll have to check it out and get the same one. I hope you put the info as to what servo tester you got! Have you gotten a high voltage BEC to power the servo tester?

For now, I'm going to use 4 x AAs for the servo tester rather than a BEC. I haven't figured out what my final system voltage would be (somewhere between 24 and 56V) which complicates getting a BEC. Also, I'm not sure if I want to run the BEC off my high-voltage --> 12VDC low power line (for the lights and horn) or if I want to go high-voltage --> 6VDC directly.

So for now, I'm just going to run it off AAs. Less to worry about!

Yeah, I've thought about that to... I was going to go with a couple Li-Po's most likely. The BEC seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

I still haven't decided on the exact motor I'm going with. I still need to get my bike, then I'll figure out what size I can go with. Of course I would love to go with the 130kv motor!

Do you happen to know the exact Diameter of the shaft on the motor? If you do thanks! If not no problem.

Yup, it's a 12mm shaft. You can use a 1/2" bore pulley if you shim it a little bit. The side walls of an aluminium soda pop can did the trick for me.

I plan on doing a setup almost exactly like Scott from the Endless-shere.com forums. I have a Go Kart chain and sprockets. I'm going to fit a one way Bearing into the sprocket on the motor so I'll need to have the sprocket machined out to press fit the bearing in.

I got my sprockets in, I'm just waiting for my bike to arrive so I can take measurements and find out what motor I'm going to go with. I hope to find a way to make the 130kv motor fit so I don't have heat issues like Scott. Plus the lower Kv will be easier to gear and keep the amps down.
