xm3k report, mods, & issues, delivered 7/7/08

Ok, it came today. Like many others, the steel packaging frame was pretty bent up, but i hoped everything else was ok. It definitely has some issues.. i'll be spending some time with xtreme sorting it out.

This is the start of the report of this bike.. i'll post pics & descriptions as i go along.

Here is some of the damage from shipping.. i'll report back on how xtreme handles it. I don't expect any problems. They are supposed to contact me within 48 hrs.

Here it is unpacked.

I rode it around some.. nice scoot!! peppy, handles well, cruises comfortably. I'll probably run it in the slower mode exclusively.. so i can not license it in Az, & to increase distance. Where i will be driving it i won't need to go over 25mph.

I tested the speedo with a gps.. it seemed right on. I guess the odometer is in KM.

My wife rode on it with me, & it handled both of us ok. She's 125# & I'm 160#, so we're below the 300# rating. The passenger pegs don't lock open.. they can flip back. I'll probably modify it to stay open.

Some stuff fell out of the box when i opened it up.. evidently i don't have a manual, one of the hand guards is gone.. & i don't know what else. The batteries charged up fine. I checked the voltage & they were all good. I bank charged them overnight & they seem fine. I'll ride it more today & see how they hold up. I won't be draining the batts much.. probably won't get them to 50% charge. I'm hoping that will add to their longevity.

I tore into the bike yesterday. I wanted to see the extent of the shipping damage, & find where things were. I took off all the back plastic & mudflap, & tried to fix the broken right blinker.

I got the steel pin back into the blinker housing, then put the circlip back on & it was almost as good as new. I'll need to tell xtreme to not bother sending me a new one.

I also put some blue threadlock on the nuts.. i usually put it on whenever i take something apart, or if i notice a loose bolt..

I took the bottom panel off & discovered where they put the dc-dc converter. It looks like this was originally intended to be battery storage. I didn't think this was the best use of space, nor did enough air get to the cooling fins, so i moved it next to the controller.

I just drilled a couple of holes through the battery compartment, then put on some shake proof nuts on some ss bolts i had laying around.

The dc-dc converter is fused both coming & going.. the output fuse is under the little cover under the seat.

I had to fish around inside a bit to find the fuse.

After ziptying the wires down, this major mod was done. I don't know what i'll do with the space under the floorboard. Maybe tool storage... smuggling? :)

Here is the vin plate.. if anyone wasn't sure where it was.. on the right side of the bike on the battery compartment.. above the passenger peg.

I got everything back together, except for the plastic, & went for a ride.. about 12 miles & the battery guage hardly moved. It was fully charged in under 1.5 hrs at 6amps. I still have yet to test the full range, though i'm not wanting to drain the batts too much.

The voltage had dropped to about 12.7 per batt after the 12 mile ride at low speed. When fully charged, they are at 13.1. I also picked up a 6 pin trailer connector at walmart, & i think i'm going to put this on the bike & charger setup, to simplify. It was only $12, & is a 6pin connector.. perfect!

I'm still very impressed overall with this scooter. There are less issues than i expected, xtreme is sending me replacement parts for the damage in shipping, the batteries are charging up & performing very well.

I may stick with the mad max look...
