wind power

Visited my Grandfathers farm last June, I had'nt been there in years. He passed away in the late 60's.
The farm is still in our family.

Was very surprised that the windmill was still there.

Re: wind power

Chuck,

It looks like it's set in furl. That has likely saved it from destruction by the occasional wind storm. It appears that it's all in working order (all the pieces are there).
Pretty amaizing, guess it was built to last.

That's looks like a nice piece of property!
That pond is almost lake size.
The property looks like it has the potential to support an off-grid lifestyle.

Is that in Texas?

Some more pictures,

Farm is about 20 miles SW of Dubuque IA. Pump ran off of electricity since I could remember. Rotor still turns, has'nt been serviced in 40 years. 2 long wooden square poles from the rotor drove those steel rods that are paralell to the pump which turned two iron flywheels. Poles are gone now. It was a good well, Grandpa kept the plastic cup way up on top of the pump, I used have to climb up to get the cup, flip the switch, water came out steady and hard in a 2 inch solid stream, and was cold.

Dad and I built the cattle shed in 72. All the buildings got bulldozed in about 74. No pictures that I am aware of.

Thought Dave would like the windmill. Also Dave, went to forcefield, found a book written in 1902 there on these, think I'll order it, see if I can identify the manufacturer.

Re: wind power

Cool,

I can almost taste that cold water ... ;)

That tower would probably work great for a nice big wind turbine ... although I like the esthetics of the original like it is.
I bet that book will be interesting.
The way some of those old books were written and illustrated is great. I have an old physics book (from the 30's I think) and it's all still relevent today. Some neat sketches in it.

Stelride,
Posted several pics, used the insert image, which downloaded the images. Do I have to wait, or is it automatic. I don't see any pics in this latest post. Not sure yesterday if you fixed it or it just takes 20 minutes for pics to update. Please help, and thanks for your help. Clean er up fer me,, just let me know what I'm not doing, should be doing etc. The help section has been down for several days at least, again thanks for fixing this yesterday.

`echuckj5,
It seems all your latest image have been inserted, BTW you have to insert each image separately. Sorry about the Help Tutorial still being down, we're still trying to get it back on line. Have you read the Attaching images and uploading files to a posting?
