Heavy-handed moderation

After the initial shock and bewilderment that came from the hacking/"hacking" (delete according to your view), I felt a certain amount of optimism and good will towards those who were trying to resurrect the good name of VV.

I'm a frequent visitor, and infrequent poster (mainly due to a lack of technical knowledge) - although this probably makes up the majority of most fora readerships. And to be honest, the way this site has evolved, whilst being interesting from a human relationship perspective, has been a bit of a disaster in terms of starting a welcoming forum, whereby information can be discussed and collated.

Looking back on "the good ole days", it seems that whilst the laissez faire approach to moderation obviously had it's drawbacks, it was particularly well suited to a the liberal world that EVing is (or at least that is my perception of it). But the sudden lurch towards censorship on this site has been surprising and pretty unedifying (I know this is what the aims etc of the site are, but it isn't working in practice).

The latest example seems to be the deleting of Reid Welch's posts after he announced he was no longer inputting into the discussion. What's the purpose of that??!!

I'll continue to look in (if only for the entertainment), but I'm not sure if this forum is going to fill the gap left by vv.com, which is a shame, as finally the EV movement seems to be gaining momentum.

Renno,
Thanks for your concern.
Reid Welch requested that he be removed, and that process also removes all post made by him. It's something we are trying to improve on. We made the decision in order to honor he written request to unpublished his post, they have not been deleted just no longer published.
It will never be our policy to use any type of censorship, some post or inappropriate or off topic for the area where they are posted, these post are moved to the General area which was set up for that purpose.
If your aware of possible censorship related issue, would you please let us know and it will be investigated. We an be contacted from the contact drop down or board_moderator@visforvoltage.org or board_moderator@visforvoltage-moderator.net
We hope this clarifies your concern

RE: Heavy-handed moderation

First I would like to thank you for your paticipation in the New V is for Voltage Forum. Second I would like to say (as a moderator captain) Yes there has been some "Heavy-handed moderation" during our growing pains. I believe you are correct in you statement. I would like to point-out that we are all new moderators and site developers who took it upon ourselves to create a new place for our community to continue to advance the world of EVs. We are trying and learning as we go so some mistakes have been made.

I want to make one item very clear. Reid Requested to be removed from the site! When a person is removed all of their post are automatically removed from the forum by the software. The moderation team did not want to loose Reid's Posts therefore to keep from loosing them we had to change them to "Anonymous" .

I hope this answers your question as to why the posts were edited.

Please continue with us and remember the "good old days" was on a forum that had been through all the growing pains. We are learning and with your help and others we will soon have good old days right here on the new V is for Voltage.

Thank you,

No problem, you only brought up a concern, after all, our community members is the reason we are here. I am sure others were also concerned and asking similar questions. I am happy we had a chance to address these concerns.

Happy EV'ers,

Did the same thing happens,

Did the same thing happens, with Fetchers posts? I think he also seems to be under the impression that his posts were deleted. If this were not the case I think its important to clarify it. We don't want people to think their posts may be deleted!

David,

Is there a way we can stop peoples posts being deleted if they log themselves out of the forum?

NickF23,
I agree, I can definitely say we have never deleted, moved any post made by Fetcher.
But I will investigate the problem and make sure my information is correct.
Thank you for your concern in this matter.

Kind regards,

Moderation for Dummies

Actually I would consider this "automatic unpublishing" a feature. If someone doesn't want to read/post any more they don't have to. We'll just leave their login and their posts. If someone wants to remove all trace of themselves including their postings, this gives us an easy way to do it. We just need to make it clear to people that removing their login will have this affect.

I agree that during the early days of this forum there were some bad decisions made by the moderators, including me, and we have taken steps to make sure these won't happen again. From the email chains I am detecting a greater and much welcome level of mellowness. My hope is that the people who were offended for diverse reasons will find themselves drifting back and once again contribute their energy and knowledge.

I think this site offers three advantages. The first is we have gone a long way towards eliminating the "single point of failure" that plagues most other sites. This weakness is never apparent until the site and all it's data goes poof. The second is with slightly more active moderation, emphasis on the word "slightly", we can maintain a better signal to noise ratio on the forum and tamp down the endless slanging matches that make groups like power-assist difficult to read and off putting to nicer people. The third is that there is a team of people moderating this site and anyone can be overruled. If you have a problem with a moderator, ask another moderator. There were a few personality conflicts that I think I could have helped diffuse had I known about them sooner.

Hmm..

Is there a way we can stop peoples posts being deleted if they log themselves out of the forum?

Well, unfortunately people cannot delete their own accounts. This is a long-standing bug in the Drupal software which they've been debating a solution for a long time, without resolution. That means it's left to the administrators to implement account deletion.

Um, as DaveW said there are various contexts within which someone might want their account deleted. If they're really angry at the site admins -- well -- they may well want to have all traces of their involvement erased. So as site admins we can do nothing more than comply with their request, right? But maybe it's a more friendly parting of ways.

In general though if every posting is associated with an account. If an account were deleted, and the postings not removed, then which account would those postings be associated to?? That actually is one of the core issues preventing a user from deleting their own account.
