Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

Hello!
For my project I used A123 20A/H packs and Mini BMS modules. And connection kit from OSN Power.

Oh my golly, what a magnificent creation! Do I understand correctly that the pouches are hung from the OSN Power connection kit and that sits on the upper rim of your battery boxes / enclosures?

where did you get all the mounting bits?

did you make them yourself?

Packages are sitting on their lower edges.Between each pack 2 mm PCB plate.Packets are compressed using a metal tape.
To avoid swelling packs.

Nice, good looking pack.... but I would like to see
pictures of the pack in the bike. How well does it fit
into the battery compartment? I assume you built
if for the Vx-1?
Thanks,

I didn't read the first post properly - I was referring to the OSN Connection kit

how much did the connection kit cost?

also what did the A123 cells cost?

i have a plug in prius project where those cells may come in useful

Yes, the battery was made according to the size of the Vectrix batterys box.2013-07-20 12.54.44.jpg

I bought the A123 packs (C grade with short terminals and small holes in them) at the price of $ 20 for a pack + $10 shipment by EMS from OSN Power company.

Connection kit cost is 2.5 USD for each cell.
But I do not recommend using this kit.
Brittle plastic. And you have to finish this set. It is necessary to add a wood screw or bolt in the middle of each plate to improve the contact between terminals of cells. You can see it in the photo.(circled in red oval)

Thank you very much to Sandy Larid and Antiscab for your help with the firmware for the charger!!! :)

Hello

Apart from the brittle plastic in the kit, how did you find the cells? I'm planning to buy the same C-grade cells from OSN, and I wonder about your experience with them this past month?

Hello!
I ordered the cells from OSN power company. If you will use A123 packs ,you must compress them to avoid swellings packages.

Re: Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

What I thought about was wheter there were any bad cells in the kit, if they were matched. Did you need to have a single cell charger to balance them before assembly?

I have checked each cell before assembling with Imax 1010B+ charger.

Re: Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

Hmm, but did they need to be balanced? Or didn't you measure them after delivery?

Also, since you haven't mentioned anything about it, I assume that no cells have gone bad in the meantime?

Finally, what BMS do you use? One from OSN?

Re: Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

I have checked internal resistans on each cell(1-3 mOhm) and charged each cell to 3.6V.
When I got a cells, their voltage was 3.3-3.4 volts.
Charged to 3.6 volts, as this voltage is less than the overlapping currents between cells. If the cells are connected in parallel.
So I tested a few cells selectively to capacity.
Capacity of cells about 18 A/h.

42 cells? Same as the original pack? Isn't 20AH less than the NiMH pack? Did your range stay the same due to the lighter batteries?

Re: Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

My configuration is 42S/2P. 84 cells.
It work with mini BMS balancing system.
So the capacity of the battery is 36 A/H.
I control the power consumption by the original Vectrix progress bar (hourglass).
I use only 32 A/H of 36A/H. Running at a speed of 100 km / h about 50 km.

Re: Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

I think I understand - so two cells are added together in parallel to make a two-pack (doubling the AH-rating & voltage), then each two-pack is added together in series to achieve the 36AH-rating and 152V - correct?
I'm sure the bike is much lighter now!

Great job!!!

I own a Li+ with battery problems.
Your A123 solution looks very good to make my conversion...

Thanks for the pics!

I also built a pack with the OSN kit, but I see quite a bit of voltage sag when I accelerate. Does your voltage stay stable?

Yes, there's a bug in visforvoltage's software:

Voltage is stable. When brute acceleration voltage drops from 142 volts to 134 volts.

Hi Yok.I'm thinking seriously on your project. Is OSN power a reliable and cheap source of A123 systems pouch cells?.How are they performing , any failures?.I had read a lot about victpower and OSN power on endless sphere , everybody warn me about victpower despite the senstation that are a big fish chinese company. But when i saw that you purchased all this cells from OSN , now I need your help or information about a cheap and good ( I know is a fantasy ) source of this valuable cells.Do you live i. Russia or Israel is the shiping cost cost-preventive?

Thanks a lot , you draw a smile on my face when i saw your project.

Re: Vectrix Lithium conversion with A123 20A/H packs.

I have been buying batteries from OSN for building packs for a year now. The batteries they supply are all as advertised. I check the internal resistance of all batteries I buy and match them in my builds. All batteries that I have bought from OSN have been within manufacturers specs.
With Endless sphere I warn you that very few on this site know about electric vehicles or batteries with a few exceptions. Take most of what you read as amateur advice.

Hi electricatalan !
Were problems with the battery. Several packages were swollen. To resolve this problem, I compressed the battery. Using the band it tool and two aluminium plates.
Now it work fine!
Each A123 20A/H pack have realy capacity about 18A/H and low internal resistance about 0.2mOhms.
I divided my order into two parcels. 48 cells in first and 36 in second.
I live in Israel. Shipment cost for 36 cells by HonkKong air post is 345 USD.
Do the battery of these cells is a very difficult job.

Why is difficult? Knowing what you know now , which cell or chemistry would you choose?.Would you choose the same A123 batteries again?

Thank you a lot Yok.
