Converting Veteran Car Generator from 6Volts to 12 Volts

I am trying to convert a 1916 Studebaker Veteran car from 6 volts to 12 volts by rewinding the field coils.
If the formula to double the number of winding turns with wire half the cross sectional area of the original wire?
