Changing the bike into a tandem

A friend of mine told me that some manufacturers produce an item that can be attached to the rear of a bike so that the bike becomes a kind of tandem. It is a kind of "half bike" with indipendent pedals that can be attached to a standard bike to change it into a "temporary tandem".

I don't have a better definition for this item, does anyone know about these and can give me a link or a key word to search for in google?

I'd like to know better about this products to see if it is possible to make my e-bike (Bionx) even more versatile by having the possibility to have a second passenger occasionally.

Thanks.

I've not seen such a thing for adults, the closest I have seen is for kids, the so called "tag a long" style trailers such as listed here:

There are lots of brands of course....

Surly makes the Big Dummy frame

and I've seen mods you can make to a standard bike, but not sure where I've seen them. Here's another interesting link:

G'luck!

Re: Changing the bike into a tandem

The BigDummy frame is just an xtracycle frame predesigned into a bike. It's not a proper tandem bike where two people are pedaling at the same time.

I remember seeing a DIY recumbent bicycle frame design which, with bolting a few things together, could easily transition from single rider to multi-rider. It might be this Transformation Trike

Re: Changing the bike into a tandem

Thanks for your many ideas. So it looks what the friend of mine saw was a "tag a long" or similar thing. So something for kids only.

Maybe cutting in half an old bycicle and creating a system to attach it to the mainbike could be an interesting experiment. Of course the idea is to "occasinoally" use this, if not of course a tandem is the only choice.

Thanks.
