Can a 24V Currietech controller handle a 36V LiON battery?

Hi, all, newbie here. Got myself a Schwinn AL1020second hand, first bike, love it, gets me to work happy and dry. Last week the charger failed and burnt out my batteries plus shorted out the on/off switch. Someone is kindly trying to put it all back together for me, but suggested that I consider upgrading to a better battery from the lead acid ones.

I'd love to go lithium, but don't want to destroy the controller if it can't handle the increased load. Does anyone have any experience using a 24v Currietech/Izip controller with a 36v lithium battery? Will this cause me to lose that precious smoke? ;)

My other option is go nickel and stay 24v, but I'd love the extra boost if I can get it without having to shell out for both the LiON battery and a new controller!

Tx,

PS, the Schwinn AL1020 is exactly the same as the IZip Mezza.
