Sorry about that.. there's a background process which should have been running multiple times a day, but due to neglect on my part wasn't. One purpose of the background process is to send out notifications like those. Yesterday I turned that background process back on, and it had a backlog of notifications to send out.. I got it worse because earthlink thinks the notifications are spam and bounced a bunch of them back to me.
