V is for Voltage is back - down, but not out, we live on

Many of you have noted that VisForVoltage has been down since Saturday. Some contacted me asking what's going on. It's been a small nightmare for me the last couple days, but I was able to get this site running again after several days of downtime.

New forum - BMW C-Evolution

It's come to our attention that a new scooter is making waves on the market big enough to warrant its own forum, the BMW C-Evolution.

See here:- http://visforvoltage.org/forums/electric-rides/electric-motorcycles-and-large-scooters/bmw-c-evolution

Have fun!

Anti-spammer measures -- re: Congratulations! You have joined a new role

In an effort to stem the tide of spam on V is for Voltage, I've installed a new feature that will prohibit new accounts from posting content with no review.

V is for Voltage has obviously gotten the attention of spammers, and every so often a load of spam gets posted on the site. There's a tradeoff between making it easy for new legitimate users to join and jump into the conversation, and making it hard for spammers to join. We've been leaning towards making it easy to join and get started posting right away but that's obviously left the door too far open for the spammers.

V is for Voltage fully back in operation - it seems

I'm happy to say I've found the right knob to twiddle in the engine room to get the site running right.

To recap - on Monday last week the host running this site had a hard crash and for most of last week V was down while files were being restored off of backup. The site was working after a fashion, but it appeared unable to create new posts etc..

I've got that worked out now (as you can see), and some other aspects of the site are working well again.

We're BACK ... but VisForVoltage is still not quite right with the world

I'm sure y'all noticed that V is for Voltage has been down the last two days. The explanation is that the server that hosts this site crashed, and the hosting provider (Dreamhost) took a very long time to recover the systems. See link below for the details. If you go to http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/ you'll see other servers crashing, and other customers having similar horror stories about the recovery and lack of response on the part of Dreamhost.

Website movements

Just wanted to note something .... This site has been moved twice in the last week. It is being moved in order to find a better performance webserver arrangement that's also easier to manage.

Last weekend I moved VisForVoltage from the place it's been the last year to a server it had been on previously. Obviously I'd forgotten how bad the performance was on that server.

Grand renaming

Those who use the forum pages to navigate this site may notice some name changes today. The idea is to make the forum names a little more obvious not just to y'all who browse the forum regularly, but to newcomers, and to the search engines. The names all have the same meaning, just using different words.
