Help with or tips on using V is For Voltage
Resizing pictures and uploading pictures to V is for Voltage
Submitted by Webmaster on Wed, 09/02/2009 - 07:23Pictures can be readily uploaded to VisForVoltage if you take some care. The file size has to be less than 2 megabytes size, and for display the picture has to be 500 pixels wide (or less). The first limitation is imposed by the hosting provider, and the second is required so the page layout stays sane because otherwise large images would throw page formatting off-kilter.

This image is a bit too large, eh? It's also much wider than the requirements. The following modification is done using the Preview application built in with Mac OS X. There should be a similar tool on Windows, and this should give the idea of what to do.
First open the app in an application that lets you resize the image. On the Mac this is Preview and often just double-clicking the image opens it in Preview.

To resize the image choose the 'Resize Image' option in the Tools menu.

Notice that the size is too large (more than 500 pixels wide). To change the size simply enter '500' in the width and make sure that the height changes at the same time. If your tool only changes the width and not height the picture will be distorted. In Preview there is a 'lock' icon next to the width & height which indicates the ratio of width & height will be locked together.

Next use 'Save As' to save the image UNDER A DIFFERENT FILE NAME. My camera makes file names like DSCN1435.JPG. If the resized image were simply saved back to DSCN1435.JPG it would over-write the original image. Maybe you don't care about the original image or maybe you do. You would care about the original image if at some time you wanted to print it on paper or otherwise use it for other purposes. Saving the rezied image as DSCN1435-web.JPG keeps the original image intact allowing it to be used for other purposes.
Now let's see how to upload the image. Above the edit area is a row of buttons one of which looks like a sunset picture
and below the edit area is some text reading 'Insert image or link'.
Clicking on the toolbar button brings up the following dialog window.

Click on the Browse button and a fairly complicated window comes up. If instead you click on 'Insert Image' you are brought directly to this window.

First, notice the row of words along the top of the window. Click on 'Upload' and the window changes a little bit.

Click on the Browse button and you're brought into a file selection dialog. Simply use that to browse over to where you saved the resized image, then select that image and click OK. The file name will appear in box next to 'File'. Click on the Upload button and this causes the file to upload. Then click on 'Send to BUEditor' and the image is inserted into the editor area.
Editability of forum posts and other content
Submitted by Webmaster on Sun, 06/21/2009 - 17:41In http://visforvoltage.org/forum-topic/how/145-subscribing-postings-and-getting-notifications-mail#comment-38857 it was made clear there is misunderstanding of why the edit-ability of different posts are the way they are. Let me explain..
It's a policy decision. Not a deficiency in the software. It could be changed in a moment with a permissions setting.
The existing settings are:-
- Forum posts Cannot be edited once posted
- Blog posts Can be edited by the owner once posted
- Book nodes Can be edited by the owner once posted
- Member vehicles Can be edited by the owner once posted
- Events Can be edited by the owner once posted
The above is to the best of my memory. Also moderators can edit any post at any time. Notwithstanding the above policy choices, if you've made a grevious error or otherwise want your forum post changed, just contact us and we can do it for you.
The policy choice was made 2 1/2 yrs ago. To the best of my recollection it's akin to "The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it -- Omar Khayyam".
A discussion forum is that - about discussion. A forum posting is followed by comments that are the discussion. I'm sure you've said things you wish you could unsay, I know I have. But the fact of discussion is that you say something and it hangs there in the air unable to be changed.
The other types of postings are not really about discussion. It makes sense to allow those to be edited multiple times.
When a post has been edited a 'Revisions' tab is available showing the edits made to that post.

Subscribing to postings, and getting notifications by mail
Submitted by Webmaster on Sat, 12/09/2006 - 08:40A new feature has been enabled on the site which will let you subscribe to the site so that you will get e-mail notifications. It is your choice whether to receive email notifications, and how many.
Subscribing to an individual post: You will see in the links at the bottom of a posting "subscribe post". Simply click on that and you will be subscribed, meaning you will be notified on any update to that posting.
Subscribing to an individual blog: Similarly when viewing someone's blog, a link appears named "subscribe blog". Click on that and you will be subscribed, meaning you get an email anytime a posting is made to that blog.
Subscribing to a posting as you are creating it: You'll see a "Subscribe" checkbox in the page for creating or editing a posting. Simply click that checkbox and you'll be subscribed to that posting.
Automagically subscribing to any postings you make or you comment to: Go to "My account" and then click the Edit button. You will see a checkbox marked "Autosubscribe". Click on that, then click Submit. From then on you will automatically be subscribed to any posting you make or to which you add comments.
Your 'my subscriptions' area: In the menu at the top, you will see a choice labeled "My.." under which is "My Account". The "My Account" page has a button labeled "Subscriptions". This area has features to unsubscribe from a previous subscription, to subscribe to forums, to subscribe to any content type, or to view your subscription as an RSS feed.
Subscribing to a forum: Once in the "Subscriptions" area click on "categories". You'll see at top is a list of the forums, and towards the bottom are topic names chosen for blog postings. Each one has a checkbox. Simply check off the ones you're interested in and at the bottom of the page click the Submit button. NOTE Currently there's a bug in this page that makes the following page wrong. But if you simply reload the page it will be okay.
Subscribing to all postings of a given type: Once in the "Subscriptions" area click on "content types". Here you have checkboxes next to the different types of postings. So if you want to subscribe to all forum postings, click on the "forum" checkbox. Again, click the Submit button when done.
Unsubscribing: As you browse the "Subscriptions" area if you want to unsubscribe from something simply click on the checkbox next to the subscription, to uncheck it, and then hit submit. The subscription will be removed.
RSS Feed: The subscription mechanism also generates a custom RSS feed for you. Go to the "Subscriptions" area and the link to the feed is labeled "rss feed". You can click on that but unless you know how to read XML it will be gibberish to you. It's beyond the scope of this article to help you know how to use RSS feeds. The link on this page labeled "rss feed" is a URL you should copy over to your RSS feed aggregator program.

Vectrix folder over 500 topics!
Submitted by R on Tue, 09/29/2009 - 04:58Dear web-masters,
The vectrix Folder is now over 500 topics. It's getting quite challenging for me to find old topics inside all these 500 entries.
Maybe it's time to think about a new improving way to list the topics... I'm not thinking about subfolders... maybe assigning a "category", a label to every topic, and then applying a label filter will help to list only these matching topics.
Regards,

Appropriate places for commercialized postings on V
Submitted by reikiman on Wed, 08/26/2009 - 17:23In the following post the commercial nature of that post is mentioned... But rather than reply there (and hijack SkyEnergy's post) I'm following it up over here.
And the reason it's okay is that it's in the marketplace section. The rule is marketplace==commercial && everywhereElse==nonCommercial .. that is with the caveat that there's a fuzzy line in the middle.
What happened to the search function?
Submitted by Mik on Wed, 08/05/2009 - 06:20Suddenly the search function, which used to work like a charm, is next to useless as far as functionality goes.
What happened? Has some upgrade gone horribly wrong?

UnCheck Right-Side Menus.
Submitted by garygid on Sun, 07/19/2009 - 10:15The "View" tab on the My Account page allows me to un-check (and thus eliminate) the right-side Blog menu and the right-side "recent posts" menu.
But, then, I get one last My Messages menu. Can I get rid of that last right-side menu?
