EV1 - Driving it the final week before the crusher.

Uploaded on Feb 4, 2009 by Darell Dickey My 1997 EV1. Footage taken in November, 2003 just a week before the car was returned, under duress, to my local Saturn dealer. Soon after, the car was crushed. As you can clearly see, the car deserved a good crushing - for my own good.

A decade ago GM's electric car, the EV1, was a flop in the marketplace. But with gas over four dollars a gallon it would probably attract a lot more attention today.

Back when it was launched, the EV1 was revolutionary. It had a host of innovative features like regenerative braking and light-weight construction. But none of that could stop GM from pulling the plug on the program just a few years ago.

Did General Motors deliberately sabotage the marketing of electric cars because they threatened the motor industry? That's the allegation made in a controversial new documentary.

Ten years ago, GM unveiled the EV1 -- the first electric car for the mass market. "The EV1 was really special because it was cool and fast and fun to drive," states former GM marketer Chelsea Sexton. "These cars were so good, they would challenge the status quo of the oil industry." But despite their popularity among owners, GM quickly pulled the plug on its new product. It claims there was simply no mass market. "You could only go 100 miles before you had to recharge it so had to adapt your lifestyle to meet the needs of the vehicle," states spokesman Dave Barthmuss. But other workers believe GM never intended the EV1s to work and were more interested in promoting Hummers. "We got indications along the way that they weren't as sincere as they would have people believe," states Sexton. All the EV1s had been leased, instead of sold, to their owners. When the leases expired, GM refused to renew them and sent the cars to be crushed. But demand for electric cars keeps on growing. Some enthusiasts have converted their own cars to run on electricity and claim they have invented a battery that will last for 500km.

Bring Back The GM EV1 Press Conference 2008

On November 14th 2008 This press conference was held at the very same GM facility where the EV1 Vigil took place during February and March 2005 To Protest against GM's plans to crush and completely destroy & erase any traces that the GM EV1 had ever existed this included making 1,077 GM EV1 Car's completely disappear.

Resurrected EV1's

When GM recalled and crushed the EV1 fleet, a few survived and were given to museums and research institutions. However, in every case the EV1's were lobotomized and non-functional. But, intrepid folks managed to resurrect a few of them.

In early 2014 a pair of EV1's were discovered in China at the National Electric Vehicle Experimental & Demonstration Area near Shantou City in Guangdong Province. These were given to China by General Motors for unknown reasons - today China is GM's largest (or second largest) market, and the site of a huge research facility (in Shanghai) that in part is deep into electric vehicle research.
