Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I wanted to ask you what DC-DC-converter you got for your HID lights

It has been a LONG time since I installed it. It was a 300W no-name brand off eBay. But my wife's HID's are running fine. I simply got another DCDC converter EXACTLY the same as the original one from erider. It hasn't missed a beat.

Ah, ok, my Kelly 400W for the on-board battery heating eventually blew an input capacitor, after having gone through 4 15A input fuses during various tests. Apparently it relishes being connected to the battery indefinitely, only to be switched on an off via a separate (key-)switch, which I have now installed in my power conversion setup.

My 300W on-board DC-DC-converter is also still doing fine, no sweat.

Just on a side note about HID's. I have just installed two 100W HID 9" spotlights on my one and only petrol powered car. Driving to my parents house out in the country in the dark is dangerous. Lots of kangaroos trying to jump out infront of you. I only took these photo's with my iPhone so pictures are brighter than they look. 19,000 lumens of light makes a big difference! Maybe I should put one of these on the scooter?? Hmmmmmmm???

UPDATE: 14 February 2013 @ 9485km

I had a VERY big ride yesterday after work and did not plan it so it was un-expected. Long story (and ride) short, I had driven 71.8km and had consumed 49.18Ah. At rest at a red light, my voltage was sitting on 76.8v and under gentle acceleration (not WOT) it would drop to 65-66v. It did feel a little under powered but still ridable. I kept to the slow streets but started to get worried as the CA got closer to 50Ah. As I make it into my home street I was down to 48Ah used and I remember the BMS shutdown once around 49 something Ah. I kept to the 50km/h speed limit and loved the downhill run only using 1-2kw, then the uphill section came and I could still pull around 5-6kw but I was not game to force 8kw, I was happy with 45km/h. Anyway I got home fine (yay!) with no BMS intervention. I gladly plugged it in to do it all again today.

The point of this post is that my bike is now 17 months and 9485km old and I still seem to have the exact same sort of range as when it was new. I really hate getting the cells to 44Ah but sometimes you don't have a choice and thats why I like the BMS.

Anyway so I charged it overnight and rode into work this morning, once again pulling 8300watts full throttle up hill accelerating up to 80km/h the voltage still only drops to 74.8v. I am very happy with the bike and the batteries.

Good to hear your Lightning is still going strong, though that extreme ride is something even the CHL will not like too much.

By the way, your signature is beginning to be longer than some of your posts ;-)

I am also approaching 9000km now and am experiencing first troubles with the keyswitch. Often turning "ignition" off still leaves the controller under power, with none of the safety shutoffs such as brake signal or sidestand switch active. Only after I turn ignition back on, put out the side stand and then back in again, then the controller is really off with iginition off. I first thought it was moisture in there, but a recent hot air drying session of over half an hour changed nothing...

My scooter is now on 9535km and working fine. Nothing to report. Simple plug and play :)

Update: 20/2/2013 at 9648km

I was asked to meet a few guys for a drinks after work yesterday at the brewery. No worries, it was only 40km round trip so I didn't worry about charging when I got to work that morning. On my way there, after riding 29km I get a call to say the brewery is closed Mondays so we are meeting at another pub....20km away!! eek!! So I rode ALL the way out to this pub, now 48km from home. I had used 26.45Ah, which meant I only had 23.55Ah left (at best). I was circling the car park looking for a power point...LUCKILY I just saw there was one on the pole of the Pub sign!! I plugged in and YES!! it had power! Feeling happy I now walk into the pub with confidence.

2 hours later I come out to see I had regained 20Ah and the Cycle Analyst said I had used 6.1Ah, 43.9Ah left in the tank! I rode home easily and got home with 87.8km on the trip meter. I took a different route home because I didn't have to drive past my office, but my Cycle Analyst read 32.2Ah consumed. So that would mean I would have required 52.2Ah of charge, which most probably would not have been possible without a top up.

Thanks for the charge!!

Tks for your appreciation. But your scooter is 2011 battery.

now 2013 new CHL battery is even better, look at the 150A constant discharge data yesterday testing, unbelievable balance even low to 2.3V level

Wow Phil, lucky indeed you found a live, accessable outlet at your impromptu destination! It is such unplanned, sponataneous rides that REALLY put thrill in the life of an electric vehicle rider :-)
There is however also the possibility of slowing down the ride delibarately that might have allowed you to make the trip in one go using less than 48Ah. The CA is a great tool to make such extended drives possible, but it takes some math to find the right maximum current draw to stay below - in relation to the speed, i.e. distance covered in time. Of course lumbering along at below 50km/h is not always possible...

Re: ERider 8000W scooter - Australia (similar to xm5000li)

I can't imagine lumbering along below 30mph. I've never done it and would rather charge instead. Always plenty of charge points.

But, it does makes me wonder what it means in increased range. For example if I normally use 70WH/Mile at 45mph, is there any rule of thumb on how WH/Mile you would use at half that speed?

Johnny,

Your Puma motor looks identical to the motor I have on my ZEV. ZEV is running their motor at up to 9200W.

OK! Had to change back to the old motor though since this one was slower.
Quite sure it´s because it is wound for 100V and I use 72V (76,8).
Will use it in another project with 30 cells (96V).

50AH battery come out 47.5AH capacity under 3C constant discharged, very high efficiency !

That's great CHL. In my day to day experience I usually ride using 2C (80-100A) and every now and then push it to 115A (max setting) and at these numbers I can get around 50.6Ah before I hit 2.5v

I now nearly have 10,000km on my 2011 model CHL batteries and couldn't be happier with them. Good in cold weather, great in warm. I would have put around 142 charge cycles on these batteries over 17 months. So 3000 charge cycles should be around 30 YEARS!!!

But if you would like to send me a free set of 2013 model 50Ah cells, I am more than happy to install and test for you ;-)

Ok,it is our hope that you will order MAXI PUMA with 28cell battery system and I will ask Mountain chen to deduct the costs of battery for you.

That's real amazing comfortable scooter,it have gone beyond the elementary concept of ECO driving and have boosted green transportation to a new level!

Reading the SOC I would say is vital to know while driving so you can be sure you can get home or not. An idea would be to use something simple like an Arduino UNO open source programmable computer. This could then display the AH reading in real time either using your bar-graph or on a dot-matrix display. See the photo's below of my home made J-1772 electric vehicle charger based on an Arduino and using a coloured dot matrix display.

Update: 26/2/2013 @ I don't know km's

After a long hard day at work yesterday I had a bad headache so I decided to drive 26km to the other side of town to the discount chemist (drug store as americans call it). I finally get there and they have closed down and moved 10km away. Damn! Because theres a power point right out front too. So I drive to their new location and get my box of headache tablets only to come out and see 2 chinese bussiness men in suits getting a photo infront of my scooter giving the peace sign. Unfortunately they didn't speak a word of english and I didn't speak chinese. But they seemed to be happy and impressed with the bike. I even showed them the ODO showing 9500km+ and they gave thumbs up! They proceeded to take a few photo's and video as I rode away.

He had an iphone and wrote the word "Hao Zixing...." something. He took a photo of the erider web address as well, seemed impressed with that.

Really?!

I was in Guangzhou last year in a green taxi doing 70km/h on a highway and we were slowly being overtaken by a man on an electric BICYCLE with his 10 year old daughter on the back texting on her phone! I have never seen so many electric scooters, bikes, trikes, rickshaws in my life! The amazing thing is that nearly NONE of the electric vehicles I saw looked new. They all looked about 10 years old and done thousands of km's. I even saw electric full sized buses!!

Yes,most of these scooter are 500-800W power, very rare speed faster than 50km/h.

China have more full size E-car & E-bus than full size E-scooter because of government subsidy and restrict !

See attached hybrid E-bus who use CHL battery.

That looks like the bus on the bottom. Huge bus with lots of people standing, packed full, and it pulls away with a tiny whine like the scooter. I can't read chinese but on the side of the bus was a big image of a power plug with two chinese faces smiling.

Today was the first day I was able to test the scooter "comfortably" (+5C) since I installed the Cycle Analyst.
Amax= 183.5A!! equals about 13.5kW.
Seems my little Sevcon is used fully :-)

Just a question Johnny. When riding do you actually see the Amps go any higher than 115A? Because I've rarely seen my CA display higher than 115A but it will store a peak of around 125A sometimes. 5°c Comfortable...Brrrbrbrrrbrbrr. Over the last few weeks it has been pretty warm here, around 30°c and I noticed if I ride at a constant 80km/h after 20 minutes or so the LED will blink 8 times showing the motor has overheated and will cut my max Amps to around 60-70A. Maybe I should install a water pump to spray water onto the hub while driving on hot days? I could wire it up to the starter button.

Well it was just a short ride and I'm not yet familiar with the display and settings of the CA, but I saw 13kW briefly at full acceleration.
Yeah 5 degrees it not really comfortable, but the snow and ice have left the roads so I couldn't help myself :-)

Acually it might be a good idea with the water spray.
Do you have access to one of those IR temperaure meters?
It could be interesting to see how warm the motor is when the system cuts the amps, maybe it's set unnecessary low?
I think the windings and magnets should be able to handle around 140-150 degrees, but of course the outside of the motor is not that hot.
