2 - 12v chargers = 1 24v charger?

2 - 12v chargers = 1 24v charger?

Novice question here:

I asked a week or so ago about a 24volt charger. Well the wife would like for me to be sure the scooter will hold a charge before buying a 24v charger. I have 2 12v chargers, if I were to hook these up somehow and plug both in would that make a 24v charger?

I was thinking I could cut the ends off, hook both of the positive to one alligator clip and then both negs to another one.

If I plugged them both into a strip and then into an outlet would that work?

`NO, tell your wife w said, let you buy a 24 Volt Charger. You could hook up 100 that way and still only get 12 Volts.

No, the setup you describe would be hooking the chargers in parallel. It will still be 12 volts, but the charging amperage will be doubled. You could theoretically hook the chargers in series, with a positive lead of one cahrger hooked to the negative of the other, but DONT try this - It would probably damage the chargers.

To charge a 24 volt pack, presumably consisting of 2 batteries, with two 12V chargers, simply connect one charger to one of the batteries and the other charger to the other battery. You don't have to disconnect any wiring.

Short answer - NO

When you connect the red (positive) together and the black (negative) together this is know as a parallel connection and all you get is more current (amps). What you want is more voltage so they would have to be connected like your batteries are, in series. This is not a good practice with charges.

Here is what you want to do. First the 2 12-volt charges must be isolated charges. This means there can be no connection from the positive connector to either side of the AC plug and no connection from the negative connector either side of the plug. If you read 0 or very very low resistance, using a DVM or multimeter, in either of these cases the charger is NOT isolated in which case you must charge each battery separately. This can be done by disconnect the two batteries at their center point and connecting each charger to a battery.
If your charges are isolated chargers (no connection between the input plug and the output wires) then connect one charger to one battery and the other charger to the remaining battery without disconnecting the batteries at the center.
In either case I would disconnect the negative side of the batteries from the scooter.

If you are unsure about the isolation of your charges then just disconnect the batteries at their center connection, where the wire goes from on battery directly to the next, and you should have no problems. It is always safe to error on the side caution.

You can still use the 12 Volt to help keep your pack balance, by charging each 12 volt Battery separate after they are disconnected.
