battery problem??

battery problem??

Hey all, new to the forum. Wondering if anyone can help me out?
I picked up an rp200 that supposedly just needed batteries, well... when I put new batteries in, the motor runs backwards? I checked all the connections they seem to be right. In fact without even touching the throttle as soon as I flip the switch, the motor runs full speed backwards. Also, no throttle lights come on. Not sure if it's a battery prob, controller prob, power or reset switch, motor?? I'm kind of lost at this point. Any and all opinions or help would be great!

I'd guess that the controller is blown. Either the batteries are backward or the motor wires are backward. If the batteries are backward, it usually fries the insides of the controller. The fact that the motor runs full speed without any throttle indicates a shorted controller. Since the motor runs, you know the motor and batteries are good.

I'd be inclined to try reversing the battery wires and see what happens (perhaps with a smaller than normal fuse).

I assume this has a bruhsed motor.

I'm not familiar with that model, so I don't know the voltage, amp rating, etc.

You might be able to adapt a cheap controller from TNC scooters.

Thanks, That gives me a place to start ( controller ) I tried reversing the wires but got a spark, so that didnt seem right. What exactly is the controller? is that like the brain? Does that run the lights on the throttle as well? I wanna just run out and buy all new parts but then I would have more into it then a new one. So.... I'm going to have to try an narrow it down one step at a time.

The controller limits the power that goes to the motor. It's a little box with a bunch of wire stuck into it. I guess you could call it the brain.

Lights on the throttle? You mean the battery indicator lights?
I don't know about your scooter, so I couldn't really say. I have seen a few throttles that have built-in state-of-charge meters, so the controller might not have anything to do with it.

If the name is any indicator of the wattage (RP200) then you can get a controller very cheap off of a scooter parts store or eBay. You could probably replace it for less than $25. I've seen a few 24 volt controllers for less than $10 (plus shipping, of course ;)).

Yeah, I geuss they would be the battery indicator lights. I ordered a controller, when it gets here I'll find out if that solves the problem.
Thanks again! I'm sure I'll have more questions in the near future, I know nothing about these things but I've bought 2 gas choppers, 1 gas cag, 1 Rp200 ( in the last 2weeks ) and still shopping. I think I'm a little addicted.

You're almost as bad as me. I got started on this kick because I snagged a set of Kollmorgens off of eBay. I thought they'd be neat to put on a bike.

Now I'm looking at buying a welder to help with a multi-thousand dollar project. This also might require a little rewiring of my house.

By "project" do you mean putting a motor on something? not sure what kollmorgens are, I'm geussing motors!

Yeah. It's a little 400 watt brushless thing. Apparently Kollmorgen made them spin the wrong way (pretty easy to reverse) and Currie wouldn't take them. So there was a whole container that they had to sell cheap.
The main reason I got them was because of the internal controller. I have yet to use them, :p. Cost me about $150 total for four of them. Will likely sell two.

Now I'm saving for a pair of Eteks. Minimum $500 each. Plus an Alltrax controller. I think the one I want is like $400. Gonna need a welder. $600 plus gas bottle. And I'm alloting another $500 for materials, wheels, and drivetrain parts.

I'm guessing you havn't heard of an Etek. To put two of them on a pocket bike you would have to either be clinically insane or own a suit of full platemail.

If your'e still here in a couple months or so you might find out what it is. I'm not telling till it's finished. But figure nearly 20,000 (40,000+ peak) watts for a pair of Eteks and it damn well better be a missile.

Nope, Dont know what an Etek is. Whatever it is, with that much power it sounds cool!
Is that another motor? 20k-40k watts, What is that equal to in hp? Dont know what greaves are either. I'll be around for a while, looking foward to see or hear about finished product. I have to be carefull with the High Power talk, I feel a new need coming on.....100mph drag pocket bike w/wheelie bars and stabilizers out to the sides....must suppress! The wife is already worried about our three girls going 15-20mph top speed.....Hmmm.....I wonder how she'd feel about 65 in 2.2 sec.

That would be equal to about 27 (continuous) - 54 (peak) HP. Remember that electric generally out accelerates gas because of the lighter weight and the fact that motors produce the most torque at stall (albeit for a short time). For example the PMG-132 (another motor) only weighs 25 lbs but peaks at 200 ft-lbs!

The greaves thing was a joke. They're metal covers you put on your legs. Basically a piece of armor.

Don't suppress it! Feel the creativity! Just don't kill yourself (or your credit score)! Oh, and you can borrow my breastplate and gauntlets if you need them :p.

It's normal to get a spark when you connect the battery.

If the battery is backward, you would get a bigger spark and blow the fuse. It may be hard to tell the difference.

If the fat battery wires from the controller (or brain) are colored black and red, then it's a sure bet that red goes to positive and black goes to negative on the battery.

Yeah, I got quite a big spark, more than normal for sure! But the Rp2oo doesnt have a fuse ( that I know of ) so I cant tell from that. I'm going to start with the controller and hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks
