The Department of Energy released the oil import figures for March 2009. We imported 386 million barrels at a cost of $18 billion. While we are importing less oil because of the recession, the percentage of oil we are importing is remaining disappointingly stable. The March numbers show we imported 65% percent of the oil we used.
Over the past 12 months, the United States imported nearly two-thirds of the oil we used. In 2008 that amounted to $475 billion dollars. Keep in mind, this is not a one-time payment like a stimulus package or a bail-out bill. This is an annual cost of over $400 billion per year.

Mr. Pickens’ plan–to use wind power for electricity, freeing up natural gas to run vehicles and thus lessen dependence on foreign oil–has run into headwinds since he unveiled it last summer. But what appealed to the high-powered visitors at the conference was apparently Mr. Pickens’ earnestness in believing he has found a solution to the country’s ever-growing dependence on imported oil.
His presentation opened with some of the Pickens ads, extolling the virutes of wind farms to boost U.S. energy security. As the lights went up, Mr. Pickens stared out at the audience and said in his Oklahoma twang, “I couldn’t believe this 80-year-old man was the only person in America with an energy plan.”
Unlike a lot of the speakers at the conference, Mr. Pickens didn’t paint himself as a green. He stressed the need for the U.S. to lessen reliance on foreign oil, which increasingly comes from hostile or unstable countries. He noted foreign oil imports for the U.S. have jumped from 42% in 1990 to 70%, and are on their way to 75% over the next decade if nothing is done to find alternative supplies.
“We’re in a game where we have no cards,” Mr. Pickens said. “If you’re in a game with no cards, get out of the game.” If the tables were turned–if the U.S. had abundant supplies of dirty oil–Mr. Pickens said he’d prefer burning American oil to using imported natural gas.
