Subscribing to postings, and getting notifications by mail
A new feature has been enabled on the site which will let you subscribe to the site so that you will get e-mail notifications. It is your choice whether to receive email notifications, and how many.
Subscribing to an individual post: You will see in the links at the bottom of a posting "subscribe post". Simply click on that and you will be subscribed, meaning you will be notified on any update to that posting.
Subscribing to an individual blog: Similarly when viewing someone's blog, a link appears named "subscribe blog". Click on that and you will be subscribed, meaning you get an email anytime a posting is made to that blog.
Subscribing to a posting as you are creating it: You'll see a "Subscribe" checkbox in the page for creating or editing a posting. Simply click that checkbox and you'll be subscribed to that posting.
Automagically subscribing to any postings you make or you comment to: Go to "My account" and then click the Edit button. You will see a checkbox marked "Autosubscribe". Click on that, then click Submit. From then on you will automatically be subscribed to any posting you make or to which you add comments.
Your 'my subscriptions' area: In the menu at the top, you will see a choice labeled "My.." under which is "My Account". The "My Account" page has a button labeled "Subscriptions". This area has features to unsubscribe from a previous subscription, to subscribe to forums, to subscribe to any content type, or to view your subscription as an RSS feed.
Subscribing to a forum: Once in the "Subscriptions" area click on "categories". You'll see at top is a list of the forums, and towards the bottom are topic names chosen for blog postings. Each one has a checkbox. Simply check off the ones you're interested in and at the bottom of the page click the Submit button. NOTE Currently there's a bug in this page that makes the following page wrong. But if you simply reload the page it will be okay.
Subscribing to all postings of a given type: Once in the "Subscriptions" area click on "content types". Here you have checkboxes next to the different types of postings. So if you want to subscribe to all forum postings, click on the "forum" checkbox. Again, click the Submit button when done.
Unsubscribing: As you browse the "Subscriptions" area if you want to unsubscribe from something simply click on the checkbox next to the subscription, to uncheck it, and then hit submit. The subscription will be removed.
RSS Feed: The subscription mechanism also generates a custom RSS feed for you. Go to the "Subscriptions" area and the link to the feed is labeled "rss feed". You can click on that but unless you know how to read XML it will be gibberish to you. It's beyond the scope of this article to help you know how to use RSS feeds. The link on this page labeled "rss feed" is a URL you should copy over to your RSS feed aggregator program.
"Unsubscribing: As you browse the "my subscriptions" area if you want to unsubscribe from something simply click on the checkbox next to the subscription, to uncheck it, and then hit submit. The subscription will be removed."
Well, it might be. Just where does one find "my subscriptions"?
I must be blind or retarded. I cannot find "My Subscriptions anywhere. No I went to "My Account" and there I found a tab called "subscription" and on overview, I found something "pages" with a value of "2", but nothing else.
On the home page I find seven tabs:
. V forum
. Create Content
. Recent posts
. My ... (on the drop down, I found "subscription"
. Log out
Am I in the right area??
I cannot find "My Subscriptions anywhere....Am I in the right area??
Sort of. Conditions have changed since I first wrote those instructions. It is the Subscriptions tab on the My Account page which is what you wanted.
SEE, it would sure be nice to be able to EDIT the old, obsolete, wrong, incorrect, incomplete, or misspelled stuff.
Being able to keep at least the first post updated would make it unnecessary to wade through hundreds of posts looking for corrections or improvements.
It would make your forum a more valuable resource.
By making things un-editable, your database might be easier, but it makes this a frustrating forum to use.
Maybe it is the fault of your chosen software, and now it is too late to change to something else?
Gary, your question is off-topic for this thread and further it's one which has come up at other times. Therefore I've answered it here: http://visforvoltage.org/forum/6831-editability-forum-posts-and-other-content
BTW what you said makes it sound as if you believe the software running this site is some cheap deficient system. That couldn't be further from the truth. This site is run using Drupal, one of the top content management systems.
As you say, it is a discussion, and I was discussing the content of THIS thread. Not really off topic.
This topic would be more helpful to your readers if the first post was corrected, right?
Since you bring up the forum software, it might be great for you, but it (or perhaps this implementation) is frustratingly slow, as myself and others have commented. Is that likely to improve?
Edit: It took over 30 seconds to complete the "Save" of this post.
I am doing my best to add good content to your forum, and to go to the additional effort give you "real user" feedback. I do appreciate all your continuing efforts to provide and improve this forum. Thanks!
Well, doesn't work. Going to my account, clicking subscriptions, clicking "categories gets error message Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 94371840 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 71 bytes) in /home/robogeek5/visforvoltage.org/includes/form.inc on line 1338 on this computer. Setting oproblem here? So I went to the other computer, went to forums, found "Currentmotor" forum. When I click the subscribe button there, it locks up internet explorer program and I have to restart everything. (I sent email inquiry direct to you on that one a few days ago, got auto-response only).
Now in email I receive once a day a post of varuous people asking questions, never the follow-up and topics seem to be general el scooter and bike building. I was hoping to disconnect from that one and get the currentmotor discussion by email. So I shall see if you respond to my email address, or if not will check back here to try and find the correct solution.
