Subscribing to postings, and getting notifications by mail
Submitted by Webmaster on Sat, 12/09/2006 - 08:40.
A new feature has been enabled on the site which will let you subscribe to the site so that you will get e-mail notifications. It is your choice whether to receive email notifications, and how many.
Subscribing to an individual post: You will see in the links at the bottom of a posting "subscribe post". Simply click on that and you will be subscribed, meaning you will be notified on any update to that posting.
Subscribing to an individual blog: Similarly when viewing someone's blog, a link appears named "subscribe blog". Click on that and you will be subscribed, meaning you get an email anytime a posting is made to that blog.
Subscribing to a posting as you are creating it: You'll see a "Subscribe" checkbox in the page for creating or editing a posting. Simply click that checkbox and you'll be subscribed to that posting.
Automagically subscribing to any postings you make or you comment to: Go to "My account" and then click the Edit button. You will see a checkbox marked "Autosubscribe". Click on that, then click Submit. From then on you will automatically be subscribed to any posting you make or to which you add comments.
Your 'my subscriptions' area: In the menu on the right hand side, you will see a choice labeled "my subscriptions". This area has features to unsubscribe from a previous subscription, to subscribe to forums, to subscribe to any content type, or to view your subscription as an RSS feed.
Subscribing to a forum: Once in "my subscriptions" click on "categories". You'll see at top is a list of the forums, and towards the bottom are topic names chosen for blog postings. Each one has a checkbox. Simply check off the ones you're interested in and at the bottom of the page click the Submit button. NOTE Currently there's a bug in this page that makes the following page wrong. But if you simply reload the page it will be okay.
Subscribing to all postings of a given type: Once in "my subscriptions" click on "content types". Here you have checkboxes next to the different types of postings. So if you want to subscribe to all forum postings, click on the "forum" checkbox. Again, click the Submit button when done.
Unsubscribing: As you browse the "my subscriptions" area if you want to unsubscribe from something simply click on the checkbox next to the subscription, to uncheck it, and then hit submit. The subscription will be removed.
RSS Feed: The subscription mechanism also generates a custom RSS feed for you. Go to "my subscriptions" and the link to the feed is labeled "rss feed". You can click on that but unless you know how to read XML it will be gibberish to you. It's beyond the scope of this article to help you know how to use RSS feeds. The link on this page labeled "rss feed" is a URL you should copy over to your RSS feed aggregator program.
