Backup power?

Hi,
First post.
I’m thinking about getting an electric vesper style bike here in China. They are pretty cheap with most around 2200 RMB (approx US$280) after haggling.
A friend has one that will go about 40km before recharge and I was thinking about getting a similar type of bike due to being over 6 foot. I’m worried about running out of battery while I’m out and I wanted to know what sort of backup power would be feasible to transport around in the boot/case. Is it possible to get a small generator or backup batteries etc? What are the options?
Or do you have any suggestions for aq bike with long battery life?
Thanks,
D

Re: Backup power?

`dar,
Welcome to the V is for Voltage Community. What brand are you looking at? Based on the price it's probably over 36 Volt. What we call E Scooters here are sometimes call E Bikes in China. I don't know of a 36 or over Volt Generator, and I don't believe you would really gain that much if there was one.
I have a Luyuan, that has two 48 volt Battery containers, so I normally just switch to the under seat auxiliary when the main starts getting low. I'm planning to get another main 48 V that can sit on top of my other main in the floor board for longer trips if I ever need it.
I'm still using SLA's and they are very heavy, some of the newer technology Batteries are much smaller and not as heavy, so you could connect them to increase your range. There's some additional information on EV batteries
in our V is for Voltage Forums Community Hand Books you can look at.
The total weight will effect your range. There have also been some solar conversions done on E Scooters.
BTW, where do you live in China?

Peace Out,
Gman

Re: Backup power?

Thanks Gman.
I’m not really sure what brand I’m after but I’m looking for something like the LEV003 http://en.luyuan.cn/show/LEV/200704/25.html so any help as to what bike to get would be helpful.

I’m in Wenzhou, south of Shanghai. I take it that you are also in china?

Thanks,
D

Re: Backup power?

`dar,
Since I have a Luyuan, I can say I believe they make a decent product. They now mfg over a million a year. The LEV series has been around for several years. I have a PB series, and like most E Scooters as we call them here, they do ok on flats, no head wind etc. If your in a area with a lot of hills etc. you may what something larger or a E Motorcycle as they are called in China. I have a friend in YongKang City that sells them, and offers a 800 and 1000 watt model. I just sent him a IM . BTW what would this cost in China with the haggling?

BTW, I also discovered not all alternators are 12 Volt, there are even 48 volt alternators. Some people use them with home made Wind Turbines to generate electricity etc. The discussion actually came up yesterday at a Bar BQ, when someone asked the same basic question.

` ;)
Check out the Luyuan PB803A, can carry 2-3 people, pull an ordinary family car or small truck! You know anything about it, any one that has one?
