Haven't a clue Bob!

Let's take a wild guess and say it's a stylized battery hold down.

Re: What is this? Who cares?

Hurm, battery hold down is an attractive idea. But what first came to my mind was some kind of footrest.

Re: What is this? Who cares?

All good guesses, but it is actually a combination bumper/safety/vanity plate that I designed to look like it was floating or, at least, barely attached to the scooter. Hence, the "zig zag" support piece to hide behind the rear battery compartment support. Anyway, it turned out pretty good and I wanted to have a little Fun at the Forum.

Re: What is this? Who cares?

Bob,

Looks good, not only does it hide the controller it also acts as a safety device to keep people from touching the large power cables. Are you going to fill the holes with lights?

BTW still waiting for the DC to DC converters I ordered.

Re: What is this? Who cares?

I may fill some with lights, but probably not all. I might just black out a couple with a thin black backing panel. The holes were really to extend the design theme of the holes in the rest of the scooter frame.Holes_and_more_holes.jpg

Re: What is this? Who cares?

I like it Bob!

Looks like you followed through with a few themes ... The cut-out arcs at the lower corners are like the similar arc of the frame near the rear wheel, the radius at the top corners fit right in as well and the color is a right-on match.

Good Job ... smart looking scooter! :)

Re: What is this? Who cares?

Thanks for the kind words. You followed my thought exactly. Here are the finishing touches for practicality. A combination splash guard and mud flap to keep any moisture and road grime out of the electrics. Very close tolerances for the copper bracing strap, I must say. No more pictures for awhile. Wish other would post lots of pictures!

Re: What is this? Who cares?

Bob,

You got my curiousity up now ...
... how did you cut out the metal shapes?
The lightning bolt brackets couldn't have been too easy ... A water-jet would be handy but perhaps you used a bandsaw?

Thanks for enlightening us :)
Oh and you can post more pics of the scooter anytime Bob, I'd like to see the rest of it.

Re: What is this? Who cares?

Cutting mild steel plate with a Bosch saber saw and metal cutting blade is a piece of cake. Cuts like butter... almost. Clean up with files and Dremel tool. Paint covers up the rest! Last item on this scooter will be the blower. Chas. Stevenson is giving me some assistance with the blower/dc-dc converter wiring and once it is installed, the scooter will be complete...until I upgrade it to 48v. Ha!

Re: What is this? Who cares?

Is the blower to keep the controller cool on hill climbs?

I have a nice DeWalt jigsaw, I got it for woodworking but never really tried it for mild steel other than the occasional bolt etc.
... guess I should expand my horizons and get to work doing some fabrication on the mountain bike build.

Re: What is this? Who cares?

The blower will be attached directly to the motor's hot end to cool things down there. I'm not really sure it needs it, but I just had a wild hair to give it a try. Had I known how hard it would be to fit into place and wire, I never would have started that project! If I go to 48v later, the blower will definitely help. As for steel cutting, get thin plate steel (you don't need it as thick as you think) and use quality metal cutting blades. If you are cutting aluminum, use wax on the blade to keep the metal from clogging up the teeth. You'll need to re-wax frequently. Give it a try and good luck.Blower__1.jpg

I promised no more pictures, but I had to send you this one.
How's this for direct injection of air!
