Re: E-Max charger failure

I hope so.

I sent a mail to BB Batteries asking about retailers. Hopefully, just hopefully it'll work out.

I have also checked around at some other brands, but lord, it's a jungle. I'll try for this battery as I know it's good, and if it doesn't work out, we'll see what'll do then.

Re: E-Max charger failure

Good news. I am going to buy directly from BB and due to the weak dollar it is going to be dead cheap.

Long live US imports of oil and useless Chinese trinkets! ;)

Sounds good. I am very satisfied with my B&B Batteries EB SERIES.
They preform so much better than the original 12 14AH that came with the Scooter.

I can now almost run with the Big Dogs, I use to hug the curb all the way, now I can occasionally pull out and lead traffic for a short period.
When the 12 Volt SLA Batteries Collaborative Hand Books gets straighten out, can you add a page about the series you purchased, and keep us updated?

Starvid ,
Thanks, if you could latter add a page after you have used them a while to B&B Batteries EB SERIES for Electric Vehicles it would be greatly appreciated.
I'll do a review of the set I purchased after I had them a month, so far I'm very satisfied. I was even stopped by the Police, indirectly because of them.

Peace Out,
Gman

Hello!
Allways the same Question:
What is the cheapest Batterie?
I`using electric vehicles for 10 jears now; (Cars...)
I also have the EMax; ~2000Km allready good Cond. Range 50-~60km
But my Girlfriend Anne has a Scooter "Baotian;500W"
Batterie was only 4 x 20Ah chinese quality VRLA AGM.
Now , after ~2500Km they are blowing off; and Dead.
I was looking into (my) Stock and found used but Equal Dryfit Gel 24Ah;
They fits after some little Mods under the seat;
Range now 40Km+ @ 1Kw Recharging Energie.
Good Change!
My Post:
Use good quality Batteries!
Look to data Sheets: Acount of Cykes.
Gel have ~700@80% DOD and >1000@50%DOD
AGM have~250-400 but price is allmost 50% of Gel.
GEL...Not all Tradet Gel is realy Gel; look Acurat too Datashets;
Examples: THIS is GEL:
...217.7.78.166/products/mp_range_select.asp...
but this is NOT Gel:
...hottmeyer.de/stores/catalog/index.php...
About 90% of offers are AGM
for Example; Dryfit A 400 is Gel; A412/16
But Panasonic LCR-12V17P; LC XD 1217 is AGM!
Open your Eyes!
I found out Trojan also trades with Gel; look closer to offers.
Good Range and good Realibility!

Re: E-Max charger failure

Hello Starvid,

I am also looking to order batteries from BB and contacted their "european headquarter" some time ago, but never got a reply :( .
I'd be interested to know with whom you are in contact now, and where exactly you have ordered: China directly, or USA?

Regards, Skarrin

Re: E-Max charger failure

First I mailed their European HQ and was recomended a retailer who couldn't really help me, so then I mailed the US HQ which sent me back to the Europe HQ, and there I got help from a guy called Hans de Vriese, or something like that. They ship from their storage in Belgium.

`Starvid,
We're glad it all came together for you. If you still have the contact information, we would like to place it in our EV Batteries Collaborative Hand Books in our Community Library as a aid to our other European V is for Voltage Community Members.
Which B&B did you order?
How close are you to Belgium?

Re: E-Max charger failure

I ordered 8 EB20-12's. I live in Uppsala, about 70 km's north of Stockholm, Sweden.

BB Battery Europe HQ can be contacted at hansdevriese [at] bb-battery.com

The total cost, including shipping, will probably be something like €300, depending on currency fluctuations and such.

Sound's like a good price.

The weak dollar is hurting us over here. I paid about US$540 for a set of eight, including shipping form California several months ago. The price would probably be about $600-650 now due to high lead prices.

Glad to hear your issue is resolved after all these months.

Steiride, I think the land distance from Brussels to Stockholm would be similar to say, Kansas City to New York or maybe Denver to Seattle.

Re: EMAX Battery?

Any quality 20AH sealed lead acid batteries in the standard 7.13 by 3.0 by 6.5 (inch) size will work. However, because of the number of batteries in the pack (eight) consistent quality is important, so I would avoid buying the cheapest ones you can find, unless you are only using the scooter for very short trips anyway. The best ones are BB Battery EB-20-12's or EVT20-12's. At current lead prices, they aren't cheap - close to $500 for a complete pack. But, they will last longer than the the crappy "silicone" batteries.

It is also pretty much mandatory that your re-wire the not-well-thought-out e-max battery pack arrangement from two series strings in parallel to four parallel pairs in series. The use of battery balancers is also pretty much mandatory, especially at todays battery prices, to prevent premature battery failure from imbalance, and protect your investment.

A relatively cheap internet dealer for BB batteries is here:
http://www.batteryplex.com/bb-batteries.cfm
Battery balancers can be had here:
...staabbattery.com/mm5/merchant.mvc...
http://www.evsource.com/tls_powercheq.php

I used powercheqs, but if I need to replace them, I'll probably go with the smartspark equalizers. (Although I am looking at investing in a liFePO4 pack right now)

A diagram of the re-wire using powercheqs is here:

Re: EMAX Battery?

I forgot to mention - but mixing conventional SLA's with the silicones (or mixing different mfg of any battery) doesn't seem to work very well due to differences in charge and discharge resistance, crating big imbalance probelms. So, you should plan to replace the whole silicone pack.

Make sure you have any old batteries containing lead recycled.

Re: EMAX Battery?

Hello, I recognize a number of usernames from the ill-fated Emax Connection forum that seems to have disappeared while I was overseas for the past six months. Happy to see that the voltage forum is alive and well.

I won't expect anyone to remember, but back before I left for Northern Ireland in July, I was limping along on four of the original silicone batteries in my Emax Sport. I had taken out the four weakest batteries as I could get by on five miles range each day. I hoped to avoid having to buy new batteries before leaving the country and I succeeded.

Now that I am back, I plan to purchase the BB 20-12 batteries (wired in the four parallel pairs in series configuration) that others have been finding optimal. This thread has been very useful in bringing me back up to speed, so many thanks.

I have a couple of questions, and I hope perhaps someone can shed some light.

1. Is anybody running on only four BB batteries, how much range are you getting, and is it advisable? The most range I need on any given day is ten miles.
2. I saw the links to the new powercheq-like product, BattEQ from SmartSpark. I appreciate PJD bringing this to my attention. Is anybody on the forum using these? How do they compare to the powercheqs? I'm a little wary of trying something very new as I am not very technically savvy.

I'm looking forward to getting back on the road with a more reliable scooter.
