new user - thinking about oxygen lepton or evt 4000e on ebay

Have a Lepton-E for past 3 years , very happy with it ,it use 2 24 Volt 30 A/H Nickel-Zinc battery by Evercel . The E-Bay price sound to good to be truth , check that the batteries are still good , if you have to replace them , the cost is about $ 500-600 .
There are lead-acid batteries that you can use for less $ 250, but they last less than year , decrease performance and much heavier
I paid $ 2,800 for my Lepton , this E-Bay price $1,700 is a real deal !

First, let me say I work with Electric Motorsport, so I am biased. Both of these scooters come with brand new B&B EB-50 50 amp hour AGM batteries. I run these in my own Lepton, and get about 30 mile range. Now, I almost never run for that long - it's just not good for lead acid. If you keep your trips to 15 miles, you should get 700+ cycles, about 2 years of everyday use, or 3 years if just Monday-Friday. A new set of EB-50's is $400 plus shipping.

Both scooters are very similar. The EVT is a little faster, while the Lepton is a better hill climber. The EVT has a brushed hub motor - it's nearly silent, but the brushes do wear out. The most I've seen a customer get is 7500 miles. The Lepton uses a brushless belt drive - a little more noise, but nothing to wear out or require maintanance. I've got 3000+ miles on mine and it runs great. Personally, I think the Lepton is better engineered - its digital design is pretty elegant.

Either one is a good choice. Frankly, I'm surprised Todd is letting them go at such a great price. If you do get one, I would strongly suggest you get a trunk as well. You can probably get a full size helmet (depends on model) under the seat of the Lepton, but not in the 4000 (although the 4000 does have a helmet hook under the seat). But what about the groceries? I don't use my car anymore for local errands, thanks to a trunk.

I've just looked through the manual, and it doesn't specify a maximum load. My guess is that 400 lbs. is pushing it, but should be ok. Miami is pretty flat, so you won't have to carry that up steep hills. I'm 200 lbs., and that is just fine.

I haven't seen any problems with Leptons overheating. There is a temperature sensor in the motor, and the controller is smart enough to alert you if it gets too hot. Note that this will shut the bike down until it is cool - but again, I haven't seen this problem.

MXC2000 what kind of range do you get max? Can you still source Evercels?

BTW, if you need batteries cheap you could get 8 EVP20-12s (20ah 12v) from digikey. You'd have less range but they'd work.

Well, I suppose Klaus decided against it since no one else bid, but I got that Lepton... $1650 (incl. shipping) with new batteries, from a reputable dealer? Woot!

I get about 28 to 35 miles depending on the incline and speed , the Evercel MB40-7 can still be obtained , with the proper charging regime they cannot beat by any other battery chemistry ( taking cost into consideration of course ) .A couple years ago I did run a set of 8 LC-X1220P lead acid packs, they worked fine the first 10 cycles and then gradual die out ,think may have gotten 35-40 cycles before I scrap them ,also the speed and driving distance was about half of the MB40-7 , the only good thing was their price , they were much heavier also .
The Evercel MB40-7 are not easy to work with ,however with the proper charger , been able to get past 300 cycles and still going strong .Temperature during charge is a very critical parameter to monitor and control .

Your Lepton will provide you with enjoyable transportation ,glad that you are getting new batteries , what kind are them ?, since the biggest complain with the scooter is battery performance and cycle life , it is a good chance that your scooter have the Lead Acid system .
When the Lead Acid pack goes , you may want to consider using the Evercel MB40-7, I highly recommend them .
Considering that the Lepton need about 1200 to 1500 W/H of energy to get any speed and distance , I seriously looked at the Lithuim Ion cells , since they are very light however the cost is about $2.00 W/H versus, $.50 for the Nickel-Zinc and , about $.25 for the Lead Acid , they maybe the cheapest , but with their weight and limited cycle life, in my opinion they are not cost effective at all .

Electric Motorsport is outfitting it with new B&B EB-50s. My commute is only a half mile and my neighborhood is dense, so I won't be taking it out daily (our only other vehicle, a Mini Cooper, only sees about 3000 miles a year). By the time I need to replace those batts, hopefully LiIons will be more cost effective.

I'd love to. On nice days I generally prefer to get out on the road bike and burn serious calories, but I chose a moped over a Segway specifically for picnic trips to Forest Park with my fiance.
