controller for BLDC or PMAC motors...?

Hi all,
Does anyone know of a controller that will work with a the motor that is sold as the Brushless Etek? It's a BLDC or PMAC that is the same dimensions as the Etek. The only controller I know of that will work is the Sevcon millipak, but its only 200 amps. Need more juice!!!
any suggestions?
thanks a bunch,
M

Why? 48V and 200A would be 9.6 kW, or about 13 HP. That's alot. What will you be using the motor for?

Thanks for the reply,
Even at 13hp, because of the low rpm's that this BLDC likes to spin at, it behaves like an unhappy 50cc scooter. You'd think with 13hp it would really pull. Is there any way to get the rpms up on these motors? Otherwise I thought more current would help.
thanks,
M

I think it needs a higher voltage. At 48v, the motor doesn't even want to draw 200 amps.
Rewinding the motor would be one way to deal with it, but that's a lot of work.

I'm not sure if the Mars motor is delta or wye connected. If it was wye connected, you could change it to delta and greatly increase the rpm/volt. This would be fairly easy.

I am not aware of any other controllers that are in the right voltage/current range except for some super-expensive industrial servo motor contorllers.

heyya Fechter,
Always good advice, thanks. If the mars motor is Y-wound, and the controller is limited to 48vlts, then changing the winding won't get e any more volts will it? just more current right?
thanks,
M

sorry fechter. misread your reply. increase rpms/volt not volts. doh!!!
thanks,
i'll check the windings today.

Higher battery voltage can run it faster. You may try Kelly's 72V controller: www.kellycontroller.com.

Hey, Brian from Thunderstruck told me they noticed that the Sevcon, while rated at 48 volts, actually can go much higher and is not obviously documented. They found poor performance like you described until the pack voltage was raised and he said now it feels right... If you go the Kelly route, make sure you watch for overheating the motor.

Speaking with Mr MARS / ETEK (the guy who designed the motors) he advised caution in oversppeeding these motors as they will delaminate and self destruct beyond a certain speed....!!! He said to stick with the ratings....Still that doesn't stop you from using a higher voltage, but I wouldn't spin it above 5krpm.

Re: controller for BLDC or PMAC motors...?

be careful using the kelly... look on EVDL and read up about it.

The Mars, because of the way its made mechanically, makes noise when you give it a Trap wave. It is more quiet and efficient with Sinusodal.

The kelly is Trap, the Sevcon is Sinusoidal. People are having lots of trouble right now with kelly/mars combo's.... but they're working on fixing the problem.

Stick with whats working with the Mars, and you'll be glad. You can always upgrade.
