need help please

i have a lashout scooter, and i recently bought new motor and controller from powerpack motors. my original scooter was wired for 12 volts but for my new motor i rewired it for 48 volts. i got everything hooked up and turned it on. i took 2 rides down the driveway. after that the throttle wasn't responding. then a poof of smoke. i opened it up and found the fuse melted and charred. i got another 40 amp fuse and hooked it onto one wire. then when i was about to hook it up to the other one i got a big ark. after that i just hooked up the fuse. when i looked at the on led it said it was on but the switch was in the off position. i fliped it on and off a few times but nothing happened. i made sure the controller was off as well. then i checked the throttle and that didn't work at all either. does anyone know what happened? and how to fix it? and if not does anyone know if there is somewhere that could fix it in central new york state?

Hi there,

Bad luck with the scooter. Do you have a multimeter? you might also want to try contacting powerpack motors.

yes i do have a multimeter. i have talked to powerpack motors and he doesn't seem to know what is wrong. just as i test, i hooked up everything the way it was with my old motor. nothing changed, and the throttle still wouldn't respond. :(

can anyone help?

with the multimeter set on resistance test between the phase wires and the battery positive and negative and also the between the battery positive and negative. You should be getting some resistance probably several thousand ohms. If you get no resistance you have a blown controlller.

also sounds like the throttle is damaged or you have a short circuit. test the throttle as outlined here http://www.electricscooterparts.com/troubleshooting.html and test all your cables for continuity and continuity where it shouldn't be. for example battery positive and negative etc

do you have a halls effect throttle? or a resistance throttle? what does it look like?

Another test is if you measure the resistance between each power wire and each of the motor phase wires (the fat ones), you should see a very high resistance that often changes while measuring. There are two power wires and 3 motor phase wires, this makes 6 combinations to test.

If you see a low resistance (like an ohm), it indicates a blown FET in the controller (bad).

Does the red light on the controller still come on?

my throttle is a thumb throttle. and yes, the red light still comes on

Red light is good.

I'm not sure if you have freewheel clutches, but another test is to see if there is resistance to rolling backward when the power is on. Repeat rolling backward with power off, there should be no resistance. This is sort of a shortcut way to test the hall sensor wiring.
