So I picked up some saft surplus nicad 1/2D cells today and im wonderin if this was a good idea. Lookin at the + side of these cells, they have two notches cut into opposite sides and that doesn't seem to be the norm. Is the battery suppose to have these notches cut into it like that?

Those slit on the side of the positive buttom are meant to release any gas that are released for cell abuse , underneat the button is a safety release vent which is suppose to reseal itself when the internal pressure is above a safe limits.
Back 25 -30 years ago the cell did not have this safety and have seem several explose when overcharged .real mess .
If you look at long batteries that have been in use , you may see some white film on the positive post , that is the result of overcharging .
Sometime , it will happen during discharge mode when low capacity cell are pushed into reserve charge ( this happen often when there is no low voltage disconnect in a high cell count pack)
