Attaching images and uploading files to a posting

Uploading an image to the site

There are two ways to do this, the hard way, and the not-so-hard way. The hard way does not have an easy method to make the image display. The not-so-hard way is a little obtuse but does offer a way to make the image display.

Not-so-hard: Click on the Insert image/file phrase just below the text area. The window which pops up will show the files you have uploaded. Assuming you haven't yet uploaded any files, let's upload one. Click on the Browse button and a file select dialog will appear. Use that to find the file you want to upload and click the Open button. The file name will appear in the text box. Then click the Upload File button. It will take a moment to upload the file. Once the file is uploaded it's name will appear in the upper part of the window.

Once you have one or more files uploaded, you can click on each file to see what it is. Once you have selected the file you wish to display in the posting, click the "add" button that's next to the image. Doing so will insert the HTML to make the image appear in your page.

Hard way: If you simply want to upload a file scroll down the page until you find a label marked "File Attachments". It has a triangle next to it. Click on the word, and voila some stuff appears. There is a Browse button and an Attach button. Simply click on the Browse button and a file select dialog will appear. Use that to find the file you want to upload, and click the Open button. The file name will appear in the text box. Then click the Attach button. It will take a moment to upload the file.

If it's an image you probably want to make the image display. There are two choices of making an image display, by using HTML or by using BBCODE. They will be discussed below. The URL for the file you just uploaded is listed in the File Attachments area. It will be something like

http://visforvoltage.org/files/DSCN0975.JPG

For the purpose of the HTML or BBCODE snippets below you want to truncate that URL to be just this portion:

/files/DSCN0975.JPG

Inserting an image using HTML

Suppose you have an image hosted elsewhere on the Internet. Like, you might have a Flikr account (or some other similar service like Image Shack). Or perhaps you've uploaded an image file using the hard method above.

You need to know the URL for the image. If you've uploaded an image as discussed above, you already know the URL. If it is stored on an external service, that service should be able to inform you what the URL is. Either way the image is inserted using this code:

Inserting an image using BBCODE

This site also supports BBCODE. If you click on the Compose Tips link in the navigation it will tell you all the BBCODE snippets you can use.

How do I get a quota for uploading pictures

I just tried to post an update with some pictures and the forum wouldn't upload my pics because its says my quota is 0 bytes. Am I doing something wrong? How do I get some space to upload pictures?

File uploads

decible1,

You misunderstand the way to read the quota amount (Quota = 0 bytes/500 KB). It says you have used 0 bytes of the 500 KB you are allowed. Please note there is a screen size limit of 500x500, that means a max size of 500 pixels in any direction. The max file size is 100 KB per file, of course if each of your files are 100 KB then you can only upload 5 files. Try to make the file size as small as possible while keeping the picture size no more than 500 pixels in any direction. I just did a test of a picture I have (outdoor seen) and when I sized it to 500x500. just for the test, and saved it as a gif the total size was 54 KB.

Hope this helps,

Thanks!

Thanks for the help! It worked fine once I cropped the pictures to less than 500x500 pixels.

And it's even better now

I was poking around this evening and found the IMCE module supports automagically resizing images after you upload them. That means you can upload any old image, and even if it's a million pixels wide, the web site will resize it down to a reasonable size.

Re: Attaching images and uploading files to a posting

Hi. I'm new to this forum. I can't seem to see pictures on many topics. Do they get removed? I only see the picture file names?

Thanks.
