Hubmotor disassembly?

I'm hearing a scratching noise from the my hub motor of my Erider Puma and was thinking about opening upp the motor to have a look.
Has anyone done this?
I guess I'll need some kind of gear puller or something to overcome the magnetic force when pulling out the rotor from the stator?

Re: Hubmotor disassembly?

Yes you're on the right track.

I did this many years ago - and wrote up the following instructions for an EVT4000 hub motor: https://visforvoltage.org/book-page/v-voltage-forums-community-hand-books/1104-electric-scooters-over-2000-watts

Be very careful reassembling it as the motor slams shut with strong force when the magnetic fields get hooked up.

Yeah, the Puma motor is a QS brushless motor, but I guess I need to do the same thing to open it up.
Is that a normal gear puller or a rather big one?

Re: Hubmotor disassembly?

At that time I had a kit containing several sizes of gear puller and if I remember right I used the largest of that kit.

Great, I managed to push it apart with a gear puller attached to the disc. The puller is however not big enough to push the rotor completely free from the other side (to change that bearing).

Re: Hubmotor disassembly?

Your body weight might be enough: set the axle you want to push out on the floor (concrete would be good choice) and push down on the rim/tire with your whole body weight while wiggling around a bit as the fit between axle and rotor bearing is quite tight. Once you have pushed the rotor down all the way (will not be enough yet to get the stator out completely), keep it down with one hand and a knee, and with the other grab the upper part of the axle to completely pull the stator out of the rotor. Be sure to very swiftly take the stator out and place it on the ground as far from the rotor as you can to ensure it doesn't accidentally get pulled back into the rotor.
