Building a Tilting Three Wheeler

I am currently building a Tilting Three Wheeler and about to replace the MAC Silver Can Motor (rough throttle response) with a Kollmorgen 400W. Would it be possible to post a picture of the cabling of a Kollmorgen 400W motor that has been modified to run CW. The reversing of two of the phase wires is simple. I just dont want to mix up the hall wires.

The Three Wheeler currently runs a modified US Prodrive system driving a 1/2" chain to one rear wheel. A Shimano 8 speed Hub provides gearing. A Sony Lithium Ion 25.9 Volt, 24Ah battery is enclosed in the original USPD case. All three wheels will tilt up to 45 degrees whilst cornering. Speed is 12 to 35km through the 8 gears with motor only as I have no pedals. Range 35km.

Peter,

That bike looks really beautiful. I'm very envious, I've always wanted a variable gear train for my ebike. Not so easy to make for pedel bike though. I'm also curious about your sony battery. Where did you buy it from?

Nick,

The Sony Battery Pack I am using on the Trike is made up of 84 x Sony Lithium Ion Graphite US18650GR G4 cells. They are arranged as 7S12P (7 in series by 12 in parallel). They were reclaimed from discarded Compaq Laptop battery packs and as you can imagine it took quite a while to build. Each cell has a nominal voltage of 3.7V and a capacity of 2000mah, measures 18mm in diameter by 65mm long and weighs only 44 gms. This gives a nominal voltage of 25.9 Volts and 24 Ah capacity and a built weight of 4kg. (Just under 9lbs)

A special charger with a Lithium Program and Cell Balancer is required to charge the pack. I use the Bantam 902 charger which operates from any 12V source and is capable of charging Nicad, NiMi, SLA, LiPo, LiIo and LiFe batteries. The Bantam Charger will charge the pack in four hours.

Wow, I thought I was the only guy who had built a fully suspended leaning three-wheeler. I think I may like your approach better, as it probably doesn't weigh 200 lbs.

Once I selected the lynch motor, everything had to beef up a lot. I'm just getting mine back on the road with DeWalt a123s.

What's the speed/range?

Shredder is pretty heavy, with a Lynch Motor, three 33AHr SLA, and a differential.

Best as I can recall, it had a top speed near 40, great climbing power (zoomed up a 20% grade), and a miniscule 10 mile range. No pedals, so it always provided all the power.

That looks cool, Peter; and Li batteries, no less! How do you manage the tilting? Is it by lean?

For some reason I thought that I would see a Vespa Piaggio style trike with the two wheels in the front. Is the handling much different?

Is that a Specialialized Enduro frame you modified? I guess that pedals would be a bit much to ask =)

well, I'm not Peter, but I'd say that I can't really tell that the Shredder isn't a two wheeler.

That Piaggio freaks me out, with two wheels in front.
