Scooter sales are zooming; high gas price is one reason

EDWARDSVILLE — Nearly every morning, Judy Conner pushes a dozen or so scooters
onto the front lawn of a former Pizza Hut restaurant.
She arranges them by color in a pattern to please her. Bright red next to soft
yellow one day, silver-blue next to basic black the next. She wheels out
different styles and different colors to suit the very different customers who
have visited Moto Italia since it opened a little more than a year ago.
Conner is the manager of the dealership, which specializes in European scooters
and motorcycles. For anyone who thinks a scooter is really just a mo-ped,
Conner wants to set the record straight.
