Zivan with PowerCheq Problems

The powerCheq units seem to take a short time of 1-2s to begin equalizing. This should not be a problem when used with most chargers, but the Zivan I have pulses at the end of charge cycle. I found one battery in my bike coming up to more than 15v for a short period than dipping back down as the powerCheq kicked in during the end of charge cycle. A couple others were coming up to about that, while the other three were at around 14v. This is very bad for equalization, and shut regulators (which may not have a delay) would work better than powerCheqs under these conditions.

I have to either get a charger that doesn't pulse, or get the Zivan reprogrammed.

Its a good idea to make sure your charger doesn't pulse if you plan to use powerCheq units.

That's kinda strange. If the batteries are nearly equal, and a pulse from the charger comes along that pushes it up to 15v for a second, that might not be a problem since the battery won't have time to gas. I wonder if putting capacitors across the individual batteries would correct that?

Re: Zivan with PowerCheq Problems

Capacitors might help, but I need to worry about doing other things on the bike at this time. The batteries might not be gassing, but they are not balancing the way they should be. I figured that the powerCheqs would help string balance the most at end of charge.

I know the powerCheqs would help balance during discharge, so they just might balance the batteries out after a few cycles, but I don't want to rely on that.

I'll try and find a Zivan that doesn't pulse. Or I could get two 5A 36V Soneils.

Re: Zivan with PowerCheq Problems

It looks like balance won't be such a problem. The charger pulses on the final stage of charge, but drops to a pretty low pulse current. It is only the Stage 2 that might be causing a couple batteries to come over 15v for brief periods. I don't think it will be too much a problem, but we will see.
