izip/ Currie/Currietech ENLIGHTENED 2007 Bikes

Hello there
I live in Redmond Wa, the bicycle capital of the northwest. I am seriously looking for reviews on the 2007 Izip 'enlightened' line of bikes,or the Currie 'geared hub motor' .Found tons of info on the Currie electroDrive, but the Currie 'geared hub motor' remains a mystery to me, can't find a review or Izip enlightened bikes anywhere, regardless of living in Redmond. I would love it if you would review/compare some of the new or up and coming ready made electric bikes. Some I'm really interested in

Here's my chance to plug my ebike! Sorry, it's not new or up and coming, but for the price you simply can't beat the Charger Electric Bicycle by Aerovironment. It's available for between $749 and $849 and ships from San Francisco. I bought mine in the summer of 2006.

http://abc.eznettools.net/D300013/X300109/eBike1.html

I know it's not svelte and sleek like some of the newest ebikes out there, but the performance and sturdyness of it are excellent. I have removed the 20 MPH speed limiter and have gotten it up to 30 MPH without really seriously trying. It runs like a champ.

Let me know if you're interested in more specs on it. I can't highly recommend it enough.

Hahaha, yep that's it. Add fenders, panniers, comfortable seat, head and tail lights, bike pump, horn, odometer, radio, and me on top and you've got my bike exactly! Like I said, great bike!

Re: izip/ Currie/Currietech ENLIGHTENED 2007 Bikes

Found tons of info on the Currie electroDrive, but the Currie 'geared hub motor' remains a mystery to me, can't find a review or Izip enlightened bikes anywhere

Me neither. Perhaps a small planetary gear inside the hub? My guess is they are just rolling out this product. Currie must of some marketting muscle to get it into so many dealer's catalogs so fast. The izip enlightened looks like a solid machine. I like the idea of putting the batteries out of sight and hopefully out of the weather. The claimed top speed of 17mph is a little whimpy for my taste. The price is right. You get the whole thing for just the price of a LiIon Bionx kit though I wouldn't trade my Bionx for a date with Kate Beckinsale. (Well, maybe.) Bottom line, though, it fails the battery test. I never buy a battery-powered anything until I know how to buy replacement batteries. Lots of people carry the bike. None of them carried replacement packs. My advice would be to wait for the packs and other parts to become available. By the time this happens there will be plenty of reviews to clarify your decision.

In the mean time please let me add BionX and Tres Terra to the list of bikes you are considering.

Got my mind set for the pain of spending about 12 hundred or so. Just got a ticket last week for old tabs on my car so I have newfound zeal for an ebike. I really had to look at the amount of cash i spend on just having a car ,let alone driving it legally.
Ticket was 200 buck man! then registration was 50. I currently own a 2002 stumpjumper metalmatrix .Plan was to fit it with a light motor and the best power source i can afford. Still learning about this stuff so that may be my next project. Thanks

The Bionx was high on my list .After reading your post about hacking the speed governor its gained more appeal. Its just a bit pricey. I'm really in the market for a ebike that looks like regular bike.

Yeah , not really impressed with that either, hoping to find a hack for it too. Any advise??=D

Ok about $1200, with shipping and looks like a regular Bike, want a little kick. What percentage of pedaling are you comfortable with?
Which IZIP caught your eye?
Any thoughts about Batteries?

Re: izip/ Currie/Currietech ENLIGHTENED 2007 Bikes

The problem I found with looking at ebikes that look like regular bikes is that there is nowhere to hide the batteries, and if they are hidden, it's because they are some sort of proprietary expensive battery pack that you eventually have to replace for a chunk of change.
I readily admit that my Charger bike has no illusions of slimness and regular bikeness. It's got 2 honkin regular deep cycle batteries that weigh 23 pounds, but they are cheaply and easily replaceable and they do provide enough power to carry 200 pounds of me plus the bike along quite nicely for 20 to 40 miles(depending on the assistance).
I hope you can find something that'll look like a regular bike though. That would be nice.

Re: izip/ Currie/Currietech ENLIGHTENED 2007 Bikes

being a pretty avid rider ,I enjoy pedaling. hoping to hack some speeds over 23mph .The 2007 mountain Trailz and the Street Enlightened are my picks. don't think i'd settle for the weight and size of Lead acid.
BTW the battery on these is replaceable by the owner ,by sliding it out of the downtube .Just wondering if they can be replaceed with lith.

Re: izip/ Currie/Currietech ENLIGHTENED 2007 Bikes

I've got to pedal too. It's just that it feels like I'm a really strong rider, heh heh heh. They call mine a "Bionic" bike because of that. You feel like an Olympian until you run out of juice, and then you're hurting bad.
What I would like to do in the long run is replace my lead acids with something lighter and smaller. Maybe I could squeeze extra batteries in the same void and hook them up and get extra range out of the setup. I suppose if you could do it, maybe I could too.

Personally I really like the looks of the Charger for the price, will start another post to discuss it, I'm sure the Community wants to know more about them from someone that has some first hand knowledge.

Both IZIPs seem to be a little over your budget, and a little under your desired speed correct?

Re: izip/ Currie/Currietech ENLIGHTENED 2007 Bikes

Alright folks , UPDATE; I nixed the Izip idea. I have now fallen prey to the Bionx. I ordered mine last week, as far as I know I'll be the first of few to have the newest lithium manganese battery. I wonder if they are interchangeable with the Ion and NiMh batteries. Hopefully it will arrive in seattle from Ca this week. Any advise on accessories ,tips and what not are welcomed. Also does anyone have the breakdown on the speed limiter hack step by step again? Thanks folks=D
