What would your ideal Small Scooter/Pocket Bike look like?

From the looks of things, people are getting more interested in the pedal assist bikes rather than in the little scooters. I know that personally, after I've tweaked my 2 scooters about as much as I can without spending many $$$ on Lithium batteries, I may turn my attention to bikes. But, that said, the little scooters are still fun in their own right.

I think size and weight are extremely important considerations. Small scooters may be widely used in the future as personal transport for universities, shopping malls, airports, inner-city short distances, and routine short trips. The challenge is to cut the size and weight down so they are easy to carry inside, on a bus, put in a car, or carry up stairs. They need to maintain high enough speed to be more practical than walking, and store enough energy to travel at least a few miles. Their advantages over bicycles would be that they can easily be loaded into a car or bus/subway, can be taken indoors and used in some places, and can remain with you if small and light enough to carry at all times.

I think price is not a huge consideration, but not ridiculous like the segway.

My Ideal Small E Scooter/ Pocket Bike would meet the following specifications:
Motor: in-wheel brushles, or brushed
Power: >500 watts, robust enough to deliver quite a bit more for considerable time
Top Speed: 10-20 mph
Range: >4 miles
Brakes: front/rear disc

well I cant say that for my self...
Ped assist wont make the the next leap, that is like saying "Hybirds" are going to save fuel and cut down the smog. In the end the Hybird cars that are for sale these days are all junk cause they are way too heavy and have TWO drive trains to run :? I just dont see the perpose in duel drive systems....They are then not TRUE EV's now are they..... more stuff to have to keep up with breaking down equals more money out the pocket in the end...

I am one of the people here that want to push for Sports grade high perfomance power for Autos that JUST RUN ON ELECTRIC POWER!!!! Nothing else...If it is an EV then it is an EV that JUST runs on EV power. Hybirds are stupid as well as most store bought ped asist bikes....If I want to ride a bike it is a bike and wont have a Electric powered drive to help my lazy but up a hill...it is a hill, use it to work out and do your body good....We Are all getting lazy

Sorry Bob, I dont want to be coming off as tearing into your post, but have you gotten the chance to ride a EV Motorcycle yet? If you have you would know where I am standing on this...... ;)

mr_exon, yeah. Though a lot of this depends on what you're looking for.

For example I'm impressed with what e.g. NEDRA people are doing to make high speed EV's. While I've said "death trap" to some of the vehicles Deafscooter (Craig) makes, I've known of his work for years and am very impressed with what he does.

But what I'm interested in for myself is a daily driver.

There's people who buy Lotus Elise or Porsche's or other high speed sports cars, just to drive them around town as their daily driver. Okay, I live in Silicon Valley and there's people here with a lot of money. But the thing I see is, if you drive one of those 160+ miles/hr cars down the same street I am on, you'll arrive there at approximately the same time as I do. 0-60 in 5 seconds doesn't make any difference when you're gridlocked.

What would make a difference is more two-wheelers. You can fit more two-wheelers per unit of road, than you can fit four-wheelers. I've seen it myself, in India the most popular vehicles are two wheelers of all stripes (I've been to Bangalore three times).

I think the best use for the ultra speed EV's is for demonstrating that they aren't all golf carts. So long as EV's are positioned as underpowered golf carts or NEV's then the general public won't grok why they can be useful vehicles.

Please. Okay this is an EV forum and it's clear many of us, like me, are focused on battery EV's as the solution. And to my eye the hybrid vehicles are not any kind of solution at all, but the car companies have spun it so the people believe they are contributing to the solution by buying those vehicles.

But I think very few people understand why "TRUE EV's" are a better solution than any other choice. They haven't done the research to tell them the ins and outs of which is best; hybrid or fuel cell or battery or biodiesel or ethanol or liquified coal or ...? I've been studying and am still confident that battery EV is the best choice, but I know how much research has gone into making that choice, and I know most people are too caught up with who is on American Idol to do this kind of research.

What I ment by I support sports carts and such is for the racing aspect of it...Hell "Pikes peak" Already got done with a EV sports car(that shite is GREAT for our technoligy backing in it's self, the more people race or have race cars that are as quiet on as they are off, then the more people will turn thier heads to our hobby/sport(well I hope)

Helll, When that fibber Al'gore's son was cought doing over 100mph in his Prius, I said holly cow! and well I bet the Prius sold like wild fire that month for some pot heads bad driving...... but yes DEATH TRAP, hell ya you would not catch me inone of them ;)

From a mechanic's perspective that makes great sense and I wholeheartidly agree. But you can turn out pretty good stuff now from factories that is meant to run 10 years than be junked. From this perspective hybrid cars make some sense, especially when gas goes way up (and it will). This way you can still have a large vehicle with a large carrying capacity in volume and weight and not use as much fuel. Right now, all the tech and complexity is questionable, but when gas goes up to $4 or $5, or even $6, then hybrids will be well worth the money. All electrics are great options, but they still suffer from versatility issues unless you have lithium batteries, but then they still can't really be used for long road trips.

Thats where the plug in hybrid comes in, and I can really see the logic to it. Its a transition type vehicle to bridge the gap between electric and gas powered. It can be run off the grid or renewable energy if need be.

In the end, of course, we are going to have to give the oil companies the finger. Thats what I love about riding an electric motorcycle. I'm not going 100 mpg, or even 1000 mpg, no, I'm going 1,000,000,000,000... miles per gallon (I could strap some gas on the back and say that). Essentially I am giving the oil companies the finger, and nothing beats it.

I really like this concept, and am having only too much fun on my bike. I built it for speed and power with 2 eteks. Unfortunately, you have to decide what you want in an electric vehicle, and if you build it for speed, than practicality falls off. The 2 eteks are super powerful and efficient for doing 0-60 but not that efficient for just cruising around. And the MC frame and tires to control that power cost weight. A small light scooter that can top at 45 mph such as the xm-2000 makes great sense for cruising around running errands. I might just buy a Z-20 and save wear and tear on my beast.

As for ebikes, I think they definitely have their place. There are a lot of places you can go that you can't with a heavy escooter or electric motorcycle, and throwing on a big hub motor and lithium batteries to really fly can make it a lot more fun.
