`Your aware it has brushes?

Upgrade from the wimpy 200 or 450W motor that came with your new Currie
scooter! This 600W brush type motor will improve hill climbing and overall
performance. It's plug-n-play on all 2004 Currie scooters, and is yours at a
reasonable price. Kit includes the new 600W "rare earth" magnet motor,
40A motor controller, spare fuses, wire ties, mounting bolts, and decals. You
will continue to use your original Currie twist throttle.
Complete kit only $129.95 + shipping (90 day warranty)

Gman,

there is nothing wrong with brushed motors! As long as you use them pretty close to spec and don't mind changing the brushes after a few thousand miles. They are proven, easy to control and, dead simple. Also note that all racing EVs use brushed DC motors. As long as one is aware of their limitations there shouldn't be any problems.

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

Your bike is designed for a top speed of maybe 20 mph, to pedal at 30 mph, change your chainring to a 75 tooth. Your bike was not designed to do 30 mph, add some trail to your forks to increase higher speed stability. You will supply 200 watts, you will need about an additional 1000 watts to go 30 mph. A 600 watt motor over amped will give you this speed, or, over volt it.
Pedaling at 30 mph creates a bobbing affect on short wheel bases, lengthen your wheel base and decrease your cadence by changing the rear sprocket to a 12 tooth. You will need a good controller, motor, battery pack and bicycle to go 30 mph. You will need a big battery pack to supply this power without burning it up. Off the top of my head without calculations, a minumum battery pack would be about a 600 watt/hours for a 10 mile run with few hills and not many stops along the way.

`My suggestion is you do something simple and cheap like the first one for your environmental science project, and later upgrade it.
Since it's a environmental science project, you should probably use Green Batteries or something environmentally friendly. A Solar e bike or something with a very small foot print would be nice.
Address the speed issue latter if your still interested.

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

Just a quick note of clarification - Adding Voltage will increase the RPM of the motor and increase your top speed. Adding Amps will NOT make the motor turn any faster it will just get to top RPM faster as more amps will give more torque. I have used scooter motors on my bikes with great success. To get the kind of speed and you want will indeed require about 1000 watts and it will have to have a slightly higher gear ratio than a normal e-bike. I have a 900 watt motor running at 48 volts on my EZ-3. This is a recumbent trike. I have the motor running to the rear axle through a 7-speed internally geared bike hub. This allows me to change my gear ratio on the fly and the bike climbs very well with a top speed of 32 MPH. I have found that using gears allows you to get much better performance with less horsepower. I can travel about 23 miles on my EZ-3 without pedaling. I have a set of B&B lead batteries 4 - 12volt 20AH.

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

Wow, thank you all for your time an expertise helping me out...
It is true this is for my env. sci class but would also like it to be practical so I can use it during the summer and beyond. I'm thrilled that I can use a motor/kit(?) from a scooter currie setup, but where would I get the rest of the parts to make this functional and how would I know the correct size? I pulled this list off from a 400w currie bike setup

-Quick release direct drive mounting plate
-Hi-Torque Motor
-36H (or 32H) bolt-on spoke adapter
-Quick Mount Battery Pack
-Handlebar mount throttle with pre-wired harness
-Neoprene wiring connector boot
-All mounting hardware for drive system, throttle, motor, & wiring
-Standard 110/220v 1-Amp Smart-Charger
-Detailed assembly and operation manual

also how much would everything cost, ballpark. Thanks!!

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

The kits for a bike and a scooter are different but the motors are similar. The bike setup is 450 usd form evdeals http://www.evdeals.com/USPDkit.htm if you want a more powerful motor you can get them from evdeals too. It might be worth emailing Scott as I heard he's got some more kits coming in soon.

As an aside you can (assuming your strong enough) pedal faster than the motors top speed on currie because it has a freewheel to allow this. You can also on most hub motors though with crystalyte motors the motor will start recharging the battery at certain speed making any increase in speed quite hard work.

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

ok, but can I use a 600w currie scooter motor on a currie bike setup? - also is there someway I can purchase a currie setup without the 450w motor so I would not have to waste it?

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

I did contact him and he said he could install a 600w motor on a currie kit but I cannot find a kit without the motor :( Also, is it possible to get more than a 24 volt battery?

Assuming I can get a setup with a better motor and/or battery is it possible to connect the motor/battery myself??

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

`SLA Batteries are 12 volt each, it's the way you connect the Batteries in series and the number used. 2 = 24 volt, 3 = 36 volt etc.
What ype of budget are you looking at?

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

I'm trying to keep it under 500. I emailed a dealer who is selling the 450w currie complete setup for 400 (including shipping) to see if he will ship it without motor and scott is saying
"The Currie drive can be set up to achieve 28-30MPH using my 750W modified BMC motor with external controller. I'd also recommend an upgrade of the roller bearing clutch and planetary gear system. This can get expensive. $308 motor/controller, $149 planetary drive, + ?$ 48V battery pack."
any advice on how to cut cost but achieve my 30mph goal (by overgearing) without going the HUB route?

thanks,
~Liam

Re: Please help me with new ebike design!

I may be able to attain a new 450w currie kit for around 320 shipped. Two questions: will this motor be powerful enough, if overgeared to attain a speed of 30 mph with pedaling? Also, If I were to replace the motor with a 6-700w currie motor would I be able to install it myself and overgear it?

Thanks,
Liam

I agree with Drunkskunk

It is good to have an electric that does not look electric. That's a nice looking rig. What voltage are you running at Drunkskunk and what kind of battery? I'm sure that info in on the forum somewhere, I'm just too lazy to go look for it.

Thank ya. Thats a bag full of SLA on the back of that thing. 48 volts, and heavy as all heck. I actualy have a 6V battery stuffed in there as well that takes me to 54 volts when I want, but I'm using it like a reserve tank right now.
