VX-1 high frequency motor noise

Hi all,
One of my VX-1's has an annoying loud noise when accelerating or regen braking. It is that typical 'cutting noise' or phase noise. It seems to come from the motor itself. My other VX-1 has the sound also, but more decent, not so annoying. I tried a lot of things trying to reduce the noise. Checked the gearbox, flushed oil, no result. Changed motor controller board, no difference. Changed encoder, no difference. Now i have changed a complete motor including gearbox. This other motor is also loud. Am i lucky to have 1 VX-1 without much noise? I would like to hear your experiences in this. Next thing to do is take a look into the electro motor part itself. Did anyone did this?

Re: VX-1 high frequency motor noise

I'm another noise sufferer.
I have just dismantled a gearbox to check out what causes the annoying noise. Amazingly, without the gears the engine is extremely silent. I suggest you check engine noise taking out the planetary gears.
I suspect the problem is located in the gears.

Close inspection revealed two issues:
1st: the planetary gears are wider than the outer gear.
2nd: the gears can move freely to the right or left on their axis.

As a result, I suspect the planetary gears may touch the gearbox walls, making that unbearable noise. I,ll try to puc plastic spacers, and make the gears thinner

Re: VX-1 high frequency motor noise

Hi R,
Thanks. The noise is when accelerating or regen braking. Without current draw it's silent. Maybe there is a link between the gears and force on the electric motor axis? I can't imagine that this would make such a difference. The noise is also high frequency, not like gear noise imo.

Re: VX-1 high frequency motor noise

Gears tend to make the most noise when under load. Such as when accelerating or regen braking.

Gears tend to make the most noise when under load. Such as when accelerating or regen braking.

Especially straight-cut spur gears like the Vectrix uses. Most modern cars use helical gears because the angled teeth engage more gradually making them much smoother and quieter.

A lot of cars still use straight-cut spur gears for reverse, which is why they sound so noisy when reversing at speed.
It always reminds me of the very pronounced gearbox whine that minis with straight-cut gears tend to make.

Hello R,
I think that you can start to change the bearing, and control if the shaft are in good condition.

After a thousand Km that I use these additive I forget the noise of my gear box.

I add just 10ml of these in the 80ml of the planetary oil and the silent is back.

Re: VX-1 high frequency motor noise

Hi archi, I,ll follow your advice and give it a try. However, the product is not sold in spain, it is pretty expensive (160 Eur/ liter), and I don't need a full size 250 ML bottle. Maybe if you have some spare ML I,d love to buy them to you...
EDIT: need advice. There are two different prices for one bottle, one around 45 eur (orange), the other one around 22 (black). The black ones are fake?

The expensive ones:

The cheap ones:

PS: yes, I also suspect the bearing is damaged... already have a new bearing to replace the old one...

Re: VX-1 high frequency motor noise

I can confirm that the nasty noise is indeed only coming from the gears. I took out the 4 gears. i discovered that the motor axis is not 100% in balance. It vibrates a bit. I mounted the 4 gears 'turned over' back in. This to put the wear layer side to reverse. I changed the position of the outer gears until i heard the less noise. The chamber i filled with Verylube (decreases noise and vibration) + Xado gear oil (had it in stock). The noise is now less. It's still there but less annoying. Hope it stays. Here you can look at Xado's Verylube: http://verylube.com/en/engine/oil-system-dv/metal-conditioners-os/verylube-turbo

Hello R,
I don't know for the black product, and yes the orange bottle is very expensive, and my apologies I haven't a bottle for send you a few Milliliters, It's one friend that he give me for try because he used this in his car and when he had listen the noise of my gear box he asked me if I wanted try this product. And after this I have forget the noise of my gearbox.
You can found on youtube a test:

And I found one with the black bottle, perhaps it's the same thing

Ok, I'll ask directly to the Swiss brand if the black one is original.
