A123Systems buys out Hymotion

A123Systems buys out Hymotion
Hot on the heels of A123Systems announcing that they would start selling plug-in hybrid conversion kits that are developed with Hymotion, A123 is now buying Hymotion outright. Hymotion developed and fabricates battery packs that can be installed in the spare tire well of a Toyota Prius. The battery packs have integrated battery charge management electronics. So far the Hymotion system has only be available to fleets but regular consumers will be able to buy them in 2008.

Hmm, 14 miles on a charge for $10,000. Hey, it's a start.

Re: A123Systems buys out Hymotion

I wonder if this could be used on an e-bike or e-motorcycle? I could not find any information on weight but a small spare tire might fit in a larger frame bike with some small modifications. I am sure you could get it to fit somewhere on a motorcycle. On an e-bike the range would be around 140 miles per charge, I am not sure what it would equate to for an e-motorcycle but I would think you could get at lease 80 miles out of it. 5KW is a lot of power and could be used to give you either speed or range with a very reasonable happy medium.

Just a thought,

Or maybe you could opt for half gas consumption at 28 miles. This might give over 100 mpg.

From the spec sheet I would expect them to follow the blue cycle curve at 88% capacity after 1000 cycles. Figure that they can be useful for reducing gas consumption (and maybe stand alone use) down to 50% of capacity or less, than thats over 4000 cycles (if the curve remains about linear). It might turn out to be a good deal.

A123Systems lithium-ion rechargeable ANR26650M1 cell is capable of very high power, long cycle and storage life, and is inherently safe due to its use of patented nanophosphate technology.
