The Douglas Pidcock 1922/1942 Electric Motorcycle -- a very early EV Motorcycle

The following information about an early early early electric motorcycle, in Great Britain, was found on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Douglas-Pidcock-1922-1942-Electric-EV-Motorcycle-18v-Veteran-Vintage-Historic-/231786664320?&afsrc=1&r...) and retrieved with a hat tip to Ted Dillard's blog post (https://evmc2.wordpress.com/2015/12/20/the-douglas-pidcock-19221942-electric-ev-motorcycle/)

It's an 18 volt motorcycle, with 3 6 volt lead acid batteries. The speed controller is a switch that selects 6v, 12v and 18v.

According to the eBay listing, it was originally built from a Douglas 2 3/4 frame then modified with Mr Pidcocks own parts, some of which were from BSA. Mr Pidock converted the motorcycle using for a daily commute to work at a engineering company in Peterborough during the time of petrol rationing. (1942/3 === WW 2)

Max speed is 18 miles/hr. Riding is quiet with just tire and chain noise. Speed is selected by a lever 3 positions 6v, 12v and 18v and the clutch lever operating a Lucas solenoid switch to bring in the motor. The motor is a Morris lorry starter motor. I've had a new industrial charger made and the bike is fitted with 3 x 6v heavy duty rubber batteries.

A brief history of the Milburn Electric automobile In late September of 1914, the Milburn Wagon Company began the manufacture of their "1915" Milburn Light Electric automobiles, based on a design by Karl Probst, who later designed the Bantam Jeep. During their eight years of production, from 1915 to 1923, they turned out over 4,000 cars. The 1915 Milburn Light Electric Coupe (Model 15) sold for $1,485 and the Roadster (Model 151) for $1,285; both were built on the same chassis with a 100-inch wheelbase. The Milburn was the lowest-priced electric of the time and much lighter than its competition. The 1915 Milburn had four forward speeds and two reverse speeds. It had a range of about 50 miles on a charge and could attain a speed of about 15 MPH as a Coupe and about 19 MPH as a Roadster.

Early Electric An excellent tour of the early history of electric vehicles... such as: 1881 Charles Jeantaud, with help from Camille Faure (inventor of the pasted plate battery), builds an electric vehicle in France. The car is made from a Tilbury style buggy with a Gramme motor and the (Faure's patent) Fulmen battery. Over the next twelve years he continued to modify this same platform installing a British motor in 1887, and used a Swiss motor with a tubular plate battery built by Tonate Thommasi in 1893.

A electric bicycle is a bicycle with an attached electric motor used to assist with pedaling. Motorized bicycles are distinguished from motorcycles by being capable of being powered by pedals alone if required. The actual usage of the pedals varies widely according to the type of vehicle. Those known as mopeds mostly have pedals for emergency use or because of legal requirements and these are not normally used. Those known as power-assist bikes have the pedals as the main form of propulsion with the motor used to give a bit of extra speed, especially uphill. Many motorized bicycles are based on standard bicycle frame designs and technologies, although the modifications to the design to support motorization may be extensive.

Luyuan & the electric bicycle industry in China: Electric bicycles are very popular in China, and there are 10's of millions on the road. "...Luyuan Electric Vehicle Limited Company was formally founded on July 3rd, 1997, and was one of the earliest enterprises specialized in electric bicycle R&D and manufacturing in China...."

moped2.org electric bicycle reviews lists reviews of some bicycles available in the late 90's. This includes the Zap DX kit, Schwinn Electro Bike, Aerovironment/Charger, US ProDrive from Currie, and EV Warrior.

The Charger bicycle was available in the late 1990's. It's frame was specifically designed to be an electric bicycle, and the overall design was done by Aerovironment. It used a pedelec design where there is no throttle, but sensors to detect pedaling and add motor power as you pedal. It used a two-chain drive system to eliminate the need for tire-driving rollers and a more efficient interconnection between the motor and each of 7 pedal gear ratios. Varsity Bike Electric Bike History & Facts has the following claims linked to articles hosted by the International Herald Tribune. IHT has changed hands and apparently the old URL's are no longer valid. However the claims seem true, e.g. the patents listed above show little work on electric bicycles until the 1970s.

E-bike History
