Wilderness Energy bike kit

I ride a bike to work most days. From 1974 to 2003 the trip was usually three miles one way, but then the office moved to make it a seven mile trip. I found a route without too many hills and I kept on biking, but I started getting more intersted in an electric bike.

I bought a used Wildernessenergy bike in September 2007 from someone who was not usimg it.

It worked OK but seemed to run down just at six miles. Maybe the battery was not charged enough, maybe it preferred people under 160 pounds, etc., etc.

In October 2007, I dropped the charger and it would not light up anymore. The local WE store in Austin, Alienscooters.com was willing to sell one for $80 but I am cheap and looked elsewhere. I found one on Ebay for much less.

Anyway, I have used the WE bike maybe once a week to get to work. I find that when the battery goes down, I can pedal OK. I usually use my other bike which is a Fuji commuter - nothing fancy - just works, or I use my Honda Accord if the weather is bad or I am too late or too lazy.

With gas getting to $4.00 a gallon, the bikes look cheaper, so I am going to get serious.

In May, 2008 my stars got crossed. My laptop died and wanted WindowsXP reinstalled, my Fuji kept getting flats, and I shorted out the controller on my WE.

I reinstalled WindowsXP and also UBUNTU on my laptop.
I replaced the 700x38 tires with 700x25.

I plan to get a controller from ebay.

Asuming that you have the brushed motor kit, six miles is just about what to expect. I get six miles out of mine at full throttle. Get a 48 volt controller, and add another battery and you will either go farther, or faster. If you really need more range, slower does wonders for that. I can get 10 miles, but only if I really ride slow. Litium is the answer for range, if you get the 20 ah sise. My ride is 12 miles, and all uphill to get home. The lead battery never could do that.

well, amp-hours is the answer for range. But lithium batteries helps. I have a 10AH pack I've ridden to/from work a couple times now, one way it's 10+ miles and the pack handles the distance just fine. This is with a wilderness energy 36v motor.

As for your choice of operating systems.. why even bother with windows XP? Just go with Ubuntu. It's such a cool operating system.. oh, but I'm biased perhaps, because I work with Ubuntu developers and attended their last developer summit 2 weeks ago.

Very true, so I allways suggest the 20ah lithium. I broke spokes trying to carry 20 ah of lead, so I needed lithium or better roads.
