This Met motor vs. etek

I came across this motor and im wondering how it would compare to an etek. I was thinking of putting this on a pocket bike or similar mini bike frame and running it at 48 volts. http://www.73.com/specs/ya859.php

John:

It has somewhat lower output power and efficiency than an Etek brushed motor, but 2-3 HP may be plenty for your application. Brushed Etek motors are rare and tend to bring a high price. My concerns would be:

1) What are the dimensions and the weight of the motor?

2) Can you get spare parts, especially brushes? (this may be a problem even with the Etek...)

I think it looks like a pretty decent motor. Due to it's size, it could probably take a lot of amps without frying. I bet it could be overvolted to 48v ok, but the speed will be pretty high. The main issue is the motor size and weight. Might be hard to fit on a pocketbike, but I'm sure it would really make it move.

that "torque curve" is a little mistleading... its labels for HP, Torque and Amps seem misleading... and the numbers don't even match the data on the table.

I'd be very weary of this motor if its pricey.

I contacted the ebay seller, and he provided me with a different torque graph, which does not match the one on the surplus site. I've attached it here

If you compare just the pictures on EBay and surplustraders they are different. Are these really the same motor, I don't think so.

Also the motor on EBay has 4 wires and the other only has 2 wires.

Well the pictures the ebay seller presents and what they have on the surplus site are identical, which leads me to believe this ebay seller may be selling them at a profit.

Hmm, it looks like there is two different types of motors here. One is slightly longer, but the one which is longer also has a different wiring setup. I'm not sure if that may change the performance of either motor but it does raise some questions for me.

Maybe that is why the charts do not match the power and amp curves.

36 volt DC permanent magnet motors. Met 5A-3629509G. Met made these for electric scooters, carts and boats. They are brand new. We have 84 units of a 12" length and 6" diameter with a 1 1/2" shaft and 3/4 tapper diameter. We have 48 units of a 9 3/4" length and 6" diameter with a 1 1/2" shaft and a 3/4 tapper diameter YA859

Looks to me like the 12" length one is with the heatsink, and the shorter 9 3/4" one has the duel sets of wires with no heat sink. However, this is not entirely clear because in one of the pictures at the link it looks like it's over 10 inches in length, but it is hard to judge from the photo.

I would try and get some information from the manufacturer: Met motors

At this link: http://www.73.com/specs/ya859.php they also note a "fin endlbell version" being 5A-3629506H

So, the short one (listed on ebay) would appear to be: 5A-3629509G
And the long version w/fin endbell would appear to be: 5A-3629506H

I searched Met motor's website and neither of these come up. They do seem to be 36v motors. And the 5A at the beginning seems to indicate the 6-inch diameter.

I think they look like a pretty decent motor, though the taper shaft and high speed may be a challenge to deal with.

I'm seriously considering purchasing this motor, it has a tapered shaft which i think i could just turn down on a lathe and key, or just key and use a tapered sprocket/pulley. What kind of peak power would I be looking at if i were to run this motor at 48 volts though? I'm thinking of actually using this on a pocket bike strictly for drag racing in the 1/8th mile. I also already have a logisystems 48 volt 800 amp controller which i think would work well for this, as the current series motor that i have on my bike doesn't seem to be performing as i expected.IMAGE_084.jpgIMAGE_128.jpgIMAGE_130.jpg

they let you on the track with that thing? I know the NEDRA outlawed pocket bikes and go-karts a few years ago... is this just street racing?

As far as I know NEDRA still doesn't allow this class anymore, but my local track has approved that I can run the bike there, as long as i have a chain guard and full racing wear. The series motor on the bike now I found out makes about 2.5 hp at 2500 rpm, which really isn't much for a bike, the torque at low rpm is very high though and takes off very well. It's also very heavy though, probably right around 60 pounds.

It's rated for 36 volts i believe, and is rated 2.5 hp at 2300 rpm i found out from another member online. It was for a very small hand forklift.

I called them and talked to Danny, he said if i was to buy just one motor the price would be $400 regardless if it has the heat sink on the end, if I were to buy in larger quantity he said the price would be less.

That's probably not a bad price for the quality. But, I'm sure there are other motors out there that would give better performance for the money. Here's some:

I went ahead and ordered one of these motors a few days ago and it should be here on thursday this coming week. I'll get some pics of the motor guts and post them up here for anybody that may be interested.
