Pulled over in San Diego

Went something like this,
OFFICER: Do you know why I stopped you?
ME: No.
OFFICER: Well you were riding in the bicycle lane. Can I see your Motorcycle license?
ME: I was riding in the bicycle lane because this is a bicycle. And no I don't have a motorcycle lisence I don't need one.(Handed the officer a copy of the California vehical code that I had printed for just such an occasion)
OFFICER: This is a bicycle? Where are the pedals?
ME: They're under the seat, would you like to see them?
OFFICER: No that's ok. You can actually pedal this thing?
ME: Yes you can.
OFFICER: How fast does this thing go?
ME: About 20 MPH.
OFFICER: 20 MPH? No faster?
ME: Nope that would be illegal.
OFFICER: Where is the VIN number on this thing?
ME: It doesn't have a VIN number.
OFFICER: Really? Ok, please wait here for a minute. Went to his car to I guess phone a friend.
(Officer comes back after about 5 minutes)
OFFICER: I've never seen something like this before, it runs on batteries huh?
ME: Yes sir, new technology.
OFFICER: Ok, you can go now.
ME: Thanks officer, you have a safe day.:0))
I proceeded on my way with a smile on my face.

Re: Pulled over in San Diego

Have had the same conversation with Silver City PD, here in NM. I only get stopped when riding double with my girlfriend. She is very petite and the law here says minors must wear a helmet. That is the reason they give me for stopping me. What a surprise when her ID shows she is 43. Off topic but, talk about profiling. my neighbors called the police for me keeping an underage girl at my house! We both get a good laugh out of this. Things are not always as they seem. LOL

Happy scooting,

That is a classic situation! What bike exactly do you guys have (for reference)? The printout really is a good idea when you are on an e-bike that looks Vespa-esque. Great outcome.

Re: Pulled over in San Diego

Too funny about the young looking lady. My brothers wife was like that, and when she was going to colledge at 30, all the other freshmen thought she was 18 too. Here in Las Cruces NM, the cops ignore me completely, even if I'm doing 30 mph on a bike path, but my ebike is a cheap mongoose MTB with a front motor.

Re: Pulled over in San Diego

I live in Modesto, California and I keep laminated 8x10 copy of the vehicle code as it pertains to electric assisted bicycles. I have yet to use it. The local police smile or ignore me, the Sheriff's Patrol the same and California Highway Patrol likewise. I drive in the bike lanes and obey the rest of the rules of the road...unlike my human powered bike breathren.

I guess when they see a helmeted, gloved, eye protected, reflective vested, turn-signaql using 50ish man riding along they opt for something more challenging. :)
