Solenoid problem

On My Lectra project I've used this solenoid: L Series Solenoid Heavy Duty Switch 12V. It's rated for 250A continuous and the ratings overall seem sufficient for this motorcycle. But over the weekend I discovered it is 'ON' regardless of whether the coil is receiving current.

Anybody have experience with this sort of thing?

I suspect the solenoid contacts are welded shut. The only idea I have is it's rated for a max of 60 volts, and that's the pack voltage on this bike, meaning it's running at it's maximum.

I've looked at evparts.com with the solenoids they have.. and I see a couple with similar amp ratings (250A continuous) but with a higher rated voltage (120v). Those are affordable, but the ones which are rated for 400A are extraordinarily expensive.

Re: Solenoid problem

Hi David,

Not an easy item to find, is it?
This is the only place that I found that has anything close http://bluesea.com/category/1/productline/8 and I think that's the same manufacturer as the one that you have. I can only suggest that you email them to see if they have or can recommend something that will handle your 60V Continuous 250A max load.
If I see anything else, I'll let you know.

http://www.kta-ev.com/catalog/index.html

I use a manual contactor, call Ken, he picks up the phone, what he has online is just a small part of what he carries.

Re: Solenoid problem

Here they are, contactors that only get a pulse of power instead of leaving the relay up all the time using power

http://www.bridex.com.au/albright_ml52_coil_controller.htm

They are not fail safe, so if the controller is supposed to release them in a fault, you need to go to the bottom of the page and go for the chopped power version instead.

Re: Solenoid problem

Interesting, thank you for finding them. There is a convenience factor to a solenoid based contactor because they can be operated with a simple switch. I did end up using a big red button style of manual contactor and there is a coolness factor to that which appeals to a part of me. Such as, the time in 1986 when I was training a new sysop at our facility (we had Vaxes running Unix systems for a university computer science department) and I was showing him the machine room and pointed to the main power switch on the Vax 11/750 -- and said "whatever you do, don't turn that off" and then I, for some reason, not having planned it before, turned off the switch. And the whole room went quiet where before there'd been a zillion fans running making a huge continual whooshing sound. Oops. Anyway.. big red buttons are cool sorta. And simple.

And my big red button is made by Albright.. coincidentally.

Curiously evparts nor the other shops that supply EV conversion people don't carry the contactors you mention. They carry other Albright contactors, just not those.

Re: Solenoid problem

Actually...

I have been trying to find something I glanced at...

I saw a law requiring a manual interrupter accessible by the operator of the vehicle, it could not be switched or relay had to be manual.

Now I can't find it and don't know if it was DOT I was looking at or some State...

I'll keep looking.
