We got two new charging stations in Chelmsford, MA. One need a card from company to use them or get it activated by you Visa or MC and using your cell phone for free. Level one or two.
I am awaiting my card for charging like David, but in the meantime I can use MC or Visa to activate charging on my EV. Now all I have to do is wire up charge port J-1772 to built in charger on VX-1 and XM-3000.
My VX-1 requires 12-13 amperes at regular voltage and XM-3000 charges at 12 amp @ 60 volt so use Math to figure out current at 120 and 240 volts? I can't wait to use an EV and charge some place real vs my house or friends house. FREE too!!!! But at 12 cents a KWH so 12-13 time 120 = 1.5 KVA or 1500 Watts so therefore about $0.25 and hour times three hours = $0.75 .

That station is part of Coulomb's network. I tried using a credit card to activate one of those stations and couldn't get it to work. I've since received my card from Coulomb, but have yet to try it out.
Their charging stations do have a regular NEMA 5-15 outlet in them but for a higher charge rate it's better to use the J1772 through an adapter. But your charger must be capable of accepting either 120v or 240v input.
Be careful though about the cost for using the charging station. The cost varies depending on who owns a specific station. Coulomb doesn't directly own the stations, instead it's kind of like a franchising program. They sell stations to 3rd parties, who then set the policies on that station. In some cases the stations are free, in others they cost $$'s, and browsing the maps available I see costs as high as $3/hr.

There's a second network, Blink, that is in some cities. They too have an iPhone app. In the case of Blink, the cost to charge is currently free, but their website says they'll start charging money later this year. Unfortunately there aren't any Blink stations in my vicinity, so I haven't seen them in action. It's not a franchise operation like Coulomb's network, but directly operated by EcoTality. IIRC their stations only support J1772.

I don't know if this applies in all locations, but charging money for electricity can get you classified as a utility company, which means you then have to answer to the local public utility commission. I expect charging stations will end up having an 'access fee', but won't actually be allowed to meter the electricity you consume.

I forgot to mention. FREE As in no charge for electricity or parking space. You are absolutely correct in no one can charge for electricity. That would make you a distributor. MC or Visa card is for activation only and you call the 800 number and they walk you through charging process.
I checked on the web and apparently you need a clock pulse of 1000 Hz Square wave to activate J-1772 and I have to figure out how to get 120 or 240 out of plug into my bike. My XM-3000 is 240 volt AC in and I know my VX-1 works on 115 volt AC OK so I can use level one or level 2 charging but my XM-3000 will only suck 5 amperes at 240 volts input, MAX. If I flip the switch to 100 volt input then I can draw 10 or 12 amperes. Either way charge current after an hour falls after fast on XM-3000 but VX-1 keep a 12 amp 120 volt load till turn off. When I called for help — after I got home, battery was dead on cell phone, the guy said no electricity comes out till it sees battery pack voltage. Huh? So therefore it need a signal from car / bike / truck to activate charger and then some way to turn off the scenario if something goes awry?
If I can't get my bike to work in March 2012 then where do I find out how to get electrons in my EV? We have had a wicked hot Winter in Massachusetts and I expect a nice Spring and Summer riding experience. My 2007 VX-1 is old and needs to charge often. Maybe 15 miles or so.
I only put in the max amount of EV juice I could get from fuel station if I had to PAY for a fill up.

Yes, that's the case. They're charging by the hour rather than by the kilowatt-hour. It is both a way to weasel around those regulations, AND it makes sense because the time your car or whatever is sitting in front of the charging station prevents others from using that charging station.

I've used the Coulomb network level 1 ports (with their card) and it works great (completely free too). Plugshare.com is a great tool to locate stations. Hope you all add your homes to the list.

Well it looks as if my picture was taken down? David, How do I or you put it back up? And IBscootn where do I find charging station listing? For local charging here in Taxachusetts we use NEEAA charging web site. I am looking to charge my VX-1 via J-1772 standard. At least my XM-3000 via same standard. This is the outlet I need now for both EV's. In my trunk I'll still be able to use NEMA 5-15 and 6-20 to charge at peoples houses. Whee is EV charging list loacated on visforvoltage and else where on WWW? This web site is now giving me NO ACCESS on most replies here. Watt gives? I am on a learning curve for J-1772 and NO voltage it on two hot pins? Apparently it need a square wave to acitivate pins? We got out first snow of the season here in Chelmsford, MA this week.

IN addition to charge port do I need an "Arduino EV J1772 Charging " device to activate my charger? We now have three charging station in Lowell Chelmsford area so I would like to be able to use Coulomb charging for my EV's. Do I just use L1 & L2 or do I need this Arduino EV J1772 Charging station board? Bikes are nice to use any charging station for I get a full or near full charge in 3 hours. I can use Level one or Level 2 so any help on actual hook up of charging scenerio. I just got my new card in the mail today and can't wait to be first on my block to get a fill up. Free fuel vs $4.00 plus for that liquid gold? In our EAA news letter , there is always www.tucsonev.com/ advertising adapters for EV's. Are they they only ones. I got my J-1772 from out Chevroltet dealer and the other from Standard Electric. I think they charge $190.00 for basic adapter from Tuscon EV

Well, I tried the control board and it don't work exactly. Or I should say at all. First of all My XM-3000 doesn't have 12 volts. My VX-1 doesn't have 12 volts. My Kia doesn't have 12 volt either, but I could do a 12 volt battery some where. Converters are cheap enough and it can run four ways forever and ever. Even if the vehicle can not move under its own power. So an active control board is goofy.
I could figure out a way or I should say an easy way to use "Active Control Board" so I got in touch with Rush Dougherty of Tucson EV. And he sent me a completed box to hook up to my built in charger. Only $190.00 plus SH+H. URL is http://www.tucsonev.com/ so if you want to charge a vehicle that is the way to go. I will build it into my bike Monday if it works good Saturday on the back of my truck as a mock up. I have a 15 amp charger under the seat set for 240 volt AC and Coulomb Charge stations supply just that. If my XM-300 can charge in two hours then I will do my VX-1 in August. Both get a full charge in 3 hours. ~~ This is the Saturday test board to see if I can charge my scooter. A thirty five amp hour pack should be able to get a nearly full charge in 90 to 120 minutes. One good thing about getting the J-1772 from Rush is that it has a cover to prevent crud from getting into J-1772 while bike is parked out side in rain hail sleet and snow. The Chevrolet Volt J-1772 receptacle I have now will be put inside the seat of my VX-1. The box from Tucson EV consist of a switch a power on lamp and J-1772 with a one meter length of cable and I used a NEMA 5-20/ 6-20 receptacle and plugged in my 240 volt AC charger.It is set for higher voltage for I like to charge with 208/240 volt AC on all my EVs. There are so many Coulomb Charging station here in Eastern Massachusetts I can drive almost any where now. I have a new cable for my VX-1
