Freewheeling modifications to Schwinn direct drive Stealth 1000

Im wondering if anybody has experience modifiying a direct drive Schwinn into a freewheeling direct drive Schwinn? It appears replacing the axel cap bearings with one way bearings would work. I was surfing the net today and happened opon a few web pages which touted one way bearings. I guess i've led a sheltered life cause I knew about the freewheel sprocket bearing and the motor shaft bearing, but it never occurred to me that the bearings themselves could be made one way. Seems to be a simple idea. Can anyone tell me if it's been tried and how it worked out?
