When creating an electric vehicle we often utilize some sort of RPM reduction scheme to achieve optimal gearing. My question is this, what happens when you don't? What are the drawbacks of taking a motor with a target efficiency RPM of 2800 and, attaching it straight to the back wheel, thus operating far below its targeted RPM.
Can you make a motor with a target efficiency RPM that is optimal for electric bikes, or is it better to use a gear motor?
I noticed on my Giant LaFree (it drives through the rear seven gears) gives the best acceleration only at certain RPM's. Low RPM's and it pulls hard, higher RPM's and it needs more voltage to drive it just as hard. This causes me to go through the gears pretty quickly on a level road.
