I believe they are brushless motors, so they are whisper quiet. They mount mid-frame of a bike and chain-drive a sprocket that's opposite (usually the left side) of your main bicycle crank. On SM bikes, you need to change out the crank for a new crank that will freewheel...so the motor can go when you don't want to pedal, and vice versa.
Ebikes.ca has them and more info is on the web than you'll ever need. I like the idea, but I love my front drive hub motor!...works perfect and no exposed chains, no crank changes, whisper quiet...

You need a new crank that supports a chainring to allow the stokemonkey to drive the system. It assists you in peddling, so you need to let got off the throttle when your want to stop peddling and apply when you do want to peddle with assistance.
It doesn't allow you to cycle with only using the motor, your legs will always be moving.. or you are just freewheeling, motors and legs stopped.

There is no 'freewheel' in the crank AFAIU
