Hi, can anyone tell me if it's better to use a 48 volt controller on my 36 v 30 amp bicycle, the original one has gone up in smoke, it looks like the mosfets were not touching the heat sink properly, great site many thanks, James.

A 48V controller probably won't work. They usually have a Low Voltage Cutoff (LVC) of about 41+/- volts. Your 36V pack won't be high enough.

When mosfets blow, they have a tendancy to destroy the gate driver aswell (because they fail short circuit).
If you are replacing the mosfets, id also suggest replacing the gate drivers.

Cheers matt I'm not sure what a gate driver is though I'll try to find out, do you know what causes a brushless controller to spark and seem like a dead short when I try to connect just the battery and nothing else, I only have to touch the battery wires + and - to the controller + and - and I get an almighty crack and a big spark and I dont have anything else connected, cheers james
You could be seeing a spark from a current surge charging capacitors on the controller board. Try connecting the battery with a 10 ohm, 10 watt wirewound resistor in series, to limit the surge. If the resistor gets very HOT, you have a defective controller part.--Bob
