Limiting current with Kelly KDS?

Howdy,

I am working on a pocketbike conversion and I have a motor that is only rated for 28 amps. My controller is a KDS48100 - so it will do short bursts of 100 amps and then constant at 60 amps. I am trying to limit the amps to avoid frying my motor. But no luck! I used the Kelly configuration program, limited "maximum armature current" to 28% which should have put my at 28 amps, right? Yet I keep seeing 45-50 amps on my ammeter. What gives?

I am using a video camera to gather data, so here is what I am talking about:

Thanks for any help!

I will be limiting the current on a 25amp motor with a KBS 40A continuous 100A burst controller I'll let you know if I figure out how to get this working.

Re: Limiting current with Kelly KDS?

Below is the reply from Kelly Controller. If I interpret this right....the percentage in setup should be set between the continuous current and max peak current. So somewhere between 40-100 amps. Looks like "oversizing" the controller wasn't a good idea.

> 100A is peak current. Its continuous current is 40A.Usually we only limit the peak current at certain percentage.
> Usually the armature peak current shouldn't be set up below 40%.
> The controller multiplies the current from the battery to the motor.
> You can limit the battery current at certain percentage.

Well, that didn't work. Tried to set the maximum current to 41% and 50% and both times it easily went past 60 amps. Anyone have any success limiting current with a Kelly controller?
