can anyone give me an idea of what the physical difference is between a 12 volt dc motor and a 24 volt dc motor.

Similar motors, designed for different voltages, may look IDENTICAL on the outside! Internally, the motor designed for the higher voltage will have windings (coils) wound with more turns of a smaller size wire. Larger wire is required for similar power at low voltage, because higher amperage will be required at low voltages, to give the same power output. When operating voltage differences are great, the external power leads are usually much thicker for the low voltage motor.--Bob
