Mahindra to roll out electric Maxximo by October (From the Economic Times of India)

Interesting story from India - M&M to roll out electric Maxximo by October

Mahindra is one of the industrial giants in India. The Maxximo is said to be a commercial truck and that Mahindra is looking to cash in on "the increasing popularity of the low cost, low maintenance electric vehicles."

The diesel version of the mini truck Maxximo has a payload capacity of 850 kilograms, and its electric variant will have lesser capacity of around 600 kilograms. Hence these aren't exactly big trucks - but India's roads are full of small trucks.

The article also says Mahindra plans to introduce electric two-wheelers - and that Tata (another of India's industrial giants) has a "soon-to-be-launched electric variant of Tata Motors’ one-tonner Ace."

Though not very large in terms of volumes currently, electric vehicles market including two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles is all set to grow in double digits with rising fuel prices, increasing urbanisation, low-cost of ownership and low maintenance cost.

India has seen many leading manufacturers including Ultra Motor, Hero group, TVS, Tube Investments of India, Atlas and the Lohia group launching or planning to launch electric vehicles, in addition to Reva, Tata Motors and General Motors.
