First impressions of the Coda electric sedan & Technical specs

The San Francisco EAA chapter (sfeva.org) today had Coda Automotive show up to present the car and give a chance for test rides. The presenter was their VP of battery pack development and hence it was a very deep dive technical talk. I enjoyed every minute and this guy really knows his stuff -- he'd been on the EV1 program and has worked for several battery companies.

I got to sit in the car for a short ride around the block.

It's a typical average sedan except for some fancy in-cabin features. From the outside there's nothing to make this look anything special. The performance is great, handling seemed to be great, etc. All in all I think they've done a great job bringing this vehicle together and they should do well.

Does not look too ordinary to me!

It might just look like it because of the way the photos were taken, but is that heat reflective paint? That is a major point to keep the air con power requirements low, and the battery temps manageable.

There is always a way if there is no other way!

Well spotted Mik, the prototype I saw was painted a light cream colour and didn't seem to be reflective paint. The real test of the vehicle would be to subject the Coda to the same testing procedures as a new ICE model.

But still, this is real exciting progress!

I'm not exactly a car buf - to me all the sedans look alike with very few distinguishing anythings. To me this car looks like any of the hundred other similar sedans out there.

They'll be offering four colors - IIRC one of them is black. I doubt it's heat reflective. I would not in a million years buy a car this color because that color tends to blend into the background.

How much will it cost? I don't see the price anywhere?

And there's a reason for that. We asked them several times about the cost and they were really cagey. I got the impression the target is the approx $30k area (same as LEAF) but not clear whether that's before or after the $7500 government rebate.
