Kelly Controllers

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience with Kelly Controllers?

They do an 84V / 400A series motor controller for $389 which is a bargain (if in fact the controller is any good!) This is what I'm thinking of using for my CB-84V (was a CB-72V, then a CB-96V and now looking like a CB-84V :-))

They also have a brushless controller coming soon (which they say is 3 phase and 6 phase compatible) - they offer a 48V and a 72V model. Combining the 72V model with LiFe batteries on an XM2000 would be interesting...

Re: Kelly Controllers

p.s. forgot to mention that the brushless controller and their permanent magnet controller both have a regen option with an analog input for varying the amount of regen. I'm planning on using a series motor and I still don't want to do regen anyway!

Re: Kelly Controllers

I just ordered a 200A 48V controler, contactor, fuse and fuse holder from Kelly. I should have it in a couple of days. Shipping for everything was $25. I will let you know how I make out. I am also using a series wound motor. I am converting a Kawasaki 110 4-wheeler to electric. My first attempt. I hope I don't fry the controller doing something stupid while hooking it up.

I had very good communication via e-mails with them to ensure I was ordering the correct controller for my motor. They seemed very knowledgable and willing to help. I purchased everything to program it also. I look forward to playing with it.

I know sometimes you get what you pay for, and I am a little leary, I don't think these are waterproof like Altrax claims theirs are, But I plan on making a weather tight box for all the electrics. I figured for the money, the education would be worth it. I had to buy a thumb throttle from EV USA. Kelly did not have one. Even after all the components, software and shipping, I think I will have spent less than a Curtis or Altrax controller costs alone.

I could be just dumping my $$ into a fire and burning it, but... no risk, no gain.

Re: Kelly Controllers

Let me know how it goes. I've also placed an order with them - 84V 400A Controller for Series motor. I also ordered the programming cables and two DC/DC convertors (one for he 24V control circuit for the controller and one for 12V for the bikes electrical system).

Like you - I'm hoping these things are worth it. The company has been responsive so far.

BTW, do you have any info on your conversion? Perhaps you could start a blog here? Good luck!!!

Re: Kelly Controllers

I will post info on the conversion as it progresses. I got a little nervous when I followed up with the tracking info on my shipment from Kelly, It said my parts were out for delivery somewhere in Michigain. That wasn't going to work as I am in RI! A quick e-mail to Kelly revealed they had sent the wrong tracking number. A check with the new # showed that the package is waiting at my post office for me! :-) So I am very happy with the communication and the quick responce time. I may get a chance to do some bench testing this weekend. I also want to check out the programing, so I will hook it up to my PC also.
I would be interested in your project as well. If this project goes well, a street bike will probably follow, as they are far less $$ to complete than a car.

Thanks.

Ha Ha Ha Ha!
I just went to your website and realized the tracking number I had was probably yours! Go pick up your shipment at the post office! Ha Ha. That's just too funny!

Re: Kelly Controllers

Sweet! I'll see if it's arrived when I get home. Thanks for checking for me ;-)

I can't do anything with it yet though. I've ordered batteries - which haven't arrived. I've yet to order my motor and the various other components. I hope to get that done this weekend.

Do you have all your parts ready to go?

Re: Kelly Controllers

I have just about everything except the actual batteries I am using. I need to get everything layed out. I hope to get the motor mounted, and get the controller, contactor and fuse mounted to a plate in the original gas tank, with some sort of harness. Then I will use (3) 15ah batteries for testing. I plan on using (4) 22 amp-hour SLA batteries after testing is completed, only because I think I have a source for them cheap. I may even be able to set up 2-48v packs for extended range. We are just using the 4-wheeler around the yard, so we can deal with short range.

Re: Kelly Controllers

I got my controller and 2 DC/DC converters today (one is for 12V for accessory load and the other for 24V for the controller). My batteries are on order. Now it's off to shop for the motor...

Re: Kelly Controllers

I snuck out to the garage today while the family rested after a great turkey dinner.
I managed to make good progress on the controlleer mounting and wiring. We may be able to run some tests tomorrow. I had to stop because the apple pie and cherry cheese cake were ready :-P

Re: Kelly Controllers

Struggling a little right know. I kind of anticipated some problems getting the controller tuned in to the GE Elec-Trak motor. Kelly has been great, sending programing help and testing info for me. I have a few more test to try. Unfortunately, I dont have a laptop, so I have to wheel the thing over to the house, and run the connection out the window to plug it in. So testing is only done when weather and daylight permit.
Not giving up yet.
Learned alot already.

Re: Kelly Controllers

Success!

Kelly sent me a new controller with a modified program and it arrived today! I plugged it in and it worked perfectly! I am working on getting the front sprocket mounted on the motor shaft. This is a little challenging. I will keep you posted.

Kelly really came through for me! Looking forward to putting it through the paces.

By batteries are here also. I will be making brackets and such tomorrow.

Re: Kelly Controllers

Sweet - I'm glad Kelly is proving to be a good company to deal with.

I almost ordered my motor on Friday - but then Bob at EV America suggested an alternative - so I'm looking at the two power curves to decide which one to go with.

I'm in no rush - I shan't be riding until Spring anyway...
